This summer, East Bay Center for the Performing Arts (@eastbaycenter) and filmmaker and community partner Spencer Wilkinson (@spencer_isaac_w) teamed up to bring a powerful workshop to East Bay Center’s Summer Intensive, spotlighting one of the Bay Area’s legendary contributions to hip hop: Richmond Robottin’.

Led by OG Robotter Ralph “Plik Plok” Montejo (@plikplokpix), the workshop blended movement with history, giving our students a chance to learn directly from those who shaped this vibrant art form. Students also viewed a short film from Spencer’s forthcoming feature documentary, which shines a much-needed light on Richmond’s original Robotters and their enduring influence.

We’re grateful to the local artists who made this day unforgettable: Braelan Murray (Producer & Cinematographer), Robotters Willy Boyd and Todd Battle, Clemon Young (a student of Ralph), and our very own alum and instructor Jamar Welch (@imajik).

This workshop was made possible by the CA Arts Council (@calartscouncil) and Zellerbach Foundation.

I first connected with the dance style *Struttin’* back in the year 2000. Over the years, I’ve choreographed routines for battles and shows – and let me tell you, it’s one of the most complex and refined forms of choreography I’ve ever worked with. It challenges your timing, musicality, and character – but it’s pure joy.
Sadly, it’s not as present in today’s dance world as it deserves to be.
That’s why I’m excited about future projects where I aim to bring some of the pioneers of this art form to Germany and shine more light on this soulful, powerful dance culture.
