Want to impress your friends this summer? 😎🌊

Here’s a progression of some of the most popular wakesurf tricks, from beginner to advanced:

➡️ Ollie
➡️ Chop Hop
➡️ Slash
➡️ Air
➡️ Air Transfer
➡️ Board Slide
➡️ 360

The ollie is where it all starts. Learning to pop the board off the water teaches balance, timing, and board control.

The chop hop takes that same pop and applies it to the lip of the wave. If you want to learn a chop hop, you first need a solid ollie.

The slash is one of the most fun tricks to learn. It teaches you how to use the entire wave, generate speed, and throw a huge spray. Do it right and you’ll soak everyone in the boat.

The air is often the first trick that really gets people’s attention. Learning it teaches riders how to carry speed up the wave, use the lip correctly, and bring the board back down under control.

The air transfer takes that same air and adds another level of difficulty by carrying you across the wake. You can’t learn a consistent air transfer without first learning a solid air.

Board slides teach you how to break the fins loose and stay comfortable with the board sliding underneath you. This is one of the most important skills for advanced riding.

The 360 is the final trick in this progression. A consistent 360 requires board control, proper weight distribution, and the ability to disconnect the fins. That’s why learning board slides first makes the 360 much easier to understand.

Every advanced trick is built on a strong foundation. Master the basics, trust the process, and the bigger tricks will come.

One of the best parts about learning a chop hop is that it’s actually a really fun and beginner-friendly trick to work toward. When you break it down into smaller steps, it becomes much easier to understand and build confidence on the water. This is one of the best ways to learn a chop hop because, like most tricks in wakesurfing, it all comes down to building a solid foundation and progressing one step at a time.

The first step is learning to ollie in the flats. This teaches you how to create pop, control the board, and understand the feeling of leaving the water without relying on the wave. Once you’re comfortable with that, the next progression is the floater. Floaters help you learn how to use the face of the wave while staying balanced and carrying your momentum.

After you become consistent with both of those skills, you simply combine them. Take the pop and board control from the flat-water ollie and add the timing and confidence you developed with the floater, and that’s how a chop hop starts to come together.

In this video, you can actually see that entire progression: flat-water ollie ➡️ floater ➡️ chop hop. Breaking tricks down into smaller steps makes learning faster, builds confidence, and creates more consistency on the water.
