The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently released a report titled "Reassessment of the Department of Veterans Affairs Airborne Hazards and Open #BurnPit Registry" deeming the registry established in 2014 as medically "useless".

"The health problems experienced by the many veterans who deployed to Southwest Asia warrant sustained and rigorous attention and need to be addressed, but the [VA's] Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry is not the right mechanism to meet all the needs," said Dr. David Savitz, Professor of Epidemiology at Brown University School of Public Health and chairman of the committee that wrote the report.

The committee found that there are more effective mechanisms for etiologic research and population health surveillance, that the Burn Pit registry is quite expensive and more importantly the participant burden with few preventive medical benefits are little to none. The committee went on to recommend the current Burn Pit Registry be ended as it does not support its stated purpose.

While over 3.7 million veterans are eligible, more than 317,000 completed the registry while over 130,000 begun but not completed the registry. Only 30,000 (9.4%) received the optional screening for toxic exposure-related conditions.

More so, it is a poor population representation as less than 5% of the post-9/11 veterans diagnosed with cancer on active duty are represented, and unfortunately doesn’t help us much in terms of cancer death prevention and early identification.

🔸Image 2: The list of top complaints and symptoms per veteran respondents on registry.

🔸Image 3: The most frequently reported cancers per veteran respondents on registry.

Nice to see in the 270+ page report that our teams hard work through evidence-based medical research and international publications are being noted and cited. Of course we’ll continue to work hard with VA, DOD and healthcare providers towards a proactive, evidence-based, life-saving and sustaining solution 🙏🏼

5 things I despise in this world, and the worst of them is a hypocrite, cause usually they're a combination of the other 4

The other 4 are liars, thieves, child predators, and politicians

Breaking: @16th_sma just announced AR 600-9 changes time TBD
.
The tape system will STAY and the screening tables WILL NOT change.
.
Also if you score over 540 on ACFT you DO NOT have to be taped.
.
More initiatives coming, SMA says 3 more changes being looked ya at.
.
⚠️No start date yet to go effective. ⚠️

It also took them 6 months to become ready to relieve the 82nd in Europe. I count on one hand the times the 101st was called to answer an immediate crisis somewhere in the world, and that number is still zero.

Thanks to @legacytango for another banger of a meme template
