#christmastruce #wewillrememberthem #ww1 #flandersfields #battlefield

Started with morning dust in the eyes, ended with wet brown asses in the afternoon. Just another classic, unpredictable day chasing gravel through the Westhoek and parts of France. 🇧🇪🇨🇵 #GravelRide #GravelAdventure #Cyclist #GravelGrinder #RoadsLikeThese

Anzac Day 🇳🇿🇦🇺 holds a special place in our hearts, and there is something profoundly moving about marking it on the Western Front 🇧🇪. Standing where so many New Zealanders and Australians served, fell, and are still remembered brings the Anzac story into sharp, human focus. Here, the past feels close, and the values of courage, service, and sacrifice resonate deeply. We began our commemorations on the Western Front on the eve of #AnzacDay, standing with the Australian Embassy and our friends from Comines Warneton as we honoured the Anzacs, 111 years after Gallipoli. At dawn we gathered with our friends from Zonnebeke, the wider region and the international communtiy at Polygon Wood, before continuing to Te Pou Maumahara at the Passchendaele Museum to remember the courage and sacrifice of the 28th Māori Battalion. At Tyne Cot, we took pause with the stories of those who rest there. Anzac Day in Flanders Fields carried its familiar poignancy beneath the beautiful Menin Gate, where the Special Anzac Last Post echoed with meaning. We ended the day in Messines, which holds a special place for many Kiwis. At the New Zealand Battlefield Memorial, Ambassador Troup shared her family’s connection to the 1917 Battle, and together with Sgt Kiwi we honoured all New Zealanders who served, and those who continue to serve today. We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us, including the many people who travelled from far to be here. These special ceremonies would not be possible without the help of @plugstreet1418 @villedecomineswarneton @gzonnebeke @mmp1917 @lastpostassociation @stad_ieper @mesen.messines @nzpilgrimage @commonwealthwargraves and many others who dedicate so much of their time and effort to honour the Anzacs and the many other soldiers who came to the Western Front. Special thanks to @ericcompernolle for capturing the days so beautifully and for generously sharing these images with us. Lest We Forget 🌹 Kei Warware Tātou

This is gonna be a short one, because it only covers one weekend. After checking the bikes and loading them up on the car, we were away for a long weekend in France/Belgium! This is one of the training rides for Smugglers Path, and for some reason I see a lot of eclairs on their feed, so I had to try one of course. Sadly I choose one with a chocolate filling, so not really, the real deal. On our route the biggest Decathlon bike store was located, so obviously we had to stop, take a look and buy some small "souvenirs". When we arrived at our weekend getaway, instant love. The next day the weather should have been perfect for riding... but sadly it was not, so we did a couple of side quests. Visited Kassel, old medieval kinda town, with among other sightseeing things has the highest Estaminette in Belgium, sadly they had no more lunch spots available. Then we drove on to Roubaix, to visit the Vélodrome, if you know cycling, you know. Then it was on to Ipres, do a little more sightseeing and attend the Last Post. Then came Sunday... yup, onto the bikes it was, and on a very special place (again, if you know cycling, you know) rode the plugstreets and visited the grave of VDB. And that (almost) wraps up the weekend, I say almost cause we ended the weekend on a place we never visited before on all of our Belgium adventures; a frietkot!
