Step into the world of Titoluwani Damola-Sokunbi (@titoluwani_ ) where writing is not forced, but felt.

Her work moves like a quiet current, carrying the weight of unspoken truths, tender questions, and the kind of honesty that lingers long after the words end.

In “When Curiosity Killed” she invites us to sit in the stillness of human experience to notice, to feel, and to confront what often goes unsaid.

When Curiosity Killed by Titoluwani Damola-Sokunbi (@titoluwani_ )

Titoluwani is a writer whose work explores intimate and difficult truths with honesty and nuance.

She approaches writing as a flow, allowing thoughts, emotions, and stories to emerge naturally.

Her piece “When Curiosity Killed” follows Nohuoma, a child for whom a sixth sense of danger is simply a normal day.

Her curiosity and intuition lead her into a painful reality unfolding within her own home.

Some things, once seen, cannot be unseen. An unbearable truth captured in this piece.

She is a graduate of the University of Alberta, holding a BA in Psychology and French Language and Literature, and of the University of Neuchâtel, where she earned a Master’s degree in Psychology and Education.

Her piece, “She Looks Like Art,” is a love letter to Black women, a reminder that they are worth so much more than the struggles they are expected to singlehandedly carry on their backs.

We have another piece today from Paul Smith (he/il, they/iel) a writer, director, dramaturg, and producer based in Toronto.

Reflecting on this piece, Paul recounts how In 2021, he began a project to reimagine the Anansi stories he was told as contemporary fables for his niece and nephew, who were then incoming.

The project stopped in 2023 as he pursued other work, but as they continue to grow, the work will only relate more and more to them. This one may take some time to sink in, but it will stay with them until they become someone else’s auntie or uncle.

“Anansi & The Pot of Beans” is a short story about grief, love, and humanity, told using a familiar band of animals led by the trickster Kweku Anansi. It could be for bedtime, or for any time one of the spider’s life lessons shows itself to you.

Sometimes we forget what it means to process emotions alongside our will to act on them, and watching Anansi, the trickster in all our stories, still make it out to the end is a reminder that we can too.

Every knot on their web is another message for us, and this one unfolds with each poetic line.

As a writer Raphael (@v_creative_u ) values honesty above all else.

He has found it in literature, in music, and in everyday conversation. Initially writing was the avenue by which he could process and understand life’s complexities and challenges. Since then it has grown into a way of life, because it truly is everywhere.

In reading his writing, Raphael hopes that you are able to have the time to think, honestly, about common experiences and thoughts. And hopefully you are able to be found.

Paul Smith (he/il, they/iel) is a Thursday-born performer, writer, director, dramaturg, and producer from Stittsville, Ontario, now based in Toronto. Their work explores how bridges can be built to connect and care for both emerging and late-generation artists, how Black and African cultures reflect two sides of the same coin, and how spirituality, identity, and myth can reshape narratives that center marginalized bodies into stories of reclamation, innovation, and protest.

Hope Take a Walk is a monologue from the five-act play The Gathering. As a playwright, I often use prose and poetry as narrative devices within dialogue, resulting in monologues like this one.
The Gathering follows multiple generations of a Ghanaian-Canadian family haunted by tradition, fidelity, and mysticism. This excerpt is drawn from the scene “Between the Moon and the Sun.” In it, Hope—a sharp and perceptive woman and soon-to-be matriarch—confronts her husband Amos, a man of affluence and the family’s future patriarch. In the aftermath of a storm, Hope challenges Amos as he struggles to reconcile his loyalty to his wife with his misguided attention toward a young woman who appeared during the night.

Still Life by Aisha Ali ( @inaishasmirror ) is a poem consisting of a series of small, animated moments in an otherwise mundane night.

Aisha Ali is a visual artist and writer with an intuitive multidisciplinary practice spanning acrylic painting, drawing, film, poetry, and prose.

Her work explores the formation of identity and the intersecting influences of colonization, culture, trauma, and faith, asking: who are we beyond the roles we were forced to play to survive?

She lives in Treaty 6 territory (Edmonton) with her nonspeaking autistic son, and her dog-like cat, Theo.
