Part 2 of our study wardrobe build! This time we’re covering the rest of the assembly, installing the concealed hinges and working on the interiors.

We measured and drilled the hinge holes ourselves, then fitted and adjusted the doors. We also used timber clothes rails because we couldn’t find any standard metal ones we liked, and installed IKEA ÖVERSIDAN lighting that switches on automatically when the doors open. The wiring runs through channels routed into the side panels so the cabinets can sit flush against one another.

One thing I’d definitely do differently is painting the white interior panels. I sanded them but skipped the proper primer, and unfortunately the paint scratches far too easily. Something worth knowing if you’re planning to paint a similar surface.

There are quite a few small decisions and details involved in building something like this, and we’re trying to share as many of the useful ones as possible.

Still to come: custom handles, 70 metres of hand-applied edging and our custom-mixed timber finish.

Life’s a beach when the van’s set up right 🌊

A huge thanks to our client Bev for trusting us with this Ford Transit Custom build. A compact, go-anywhere van that is designed around one solo traveller who wanted freedom without compromise.

Built to roam off-grid or settle in at a caravan park. Rooftop solar keeps it charged in the bush or by the beach, while mains plug-in keeps it easy when it’s not.

The feature curve on the bed base opens up the floor so it never feels tight, with storage packed into every corner. Small van, big life.

Fit-out:
• Comfortable single bed with curved base for extra floor space
• Full-height wardrobe + overhead storage
• Kitchen bench with drawers and under-bench cupboards
• Bushman fridge with bench-top prep space + microwave
• Rooftop solar + 240V mains hook-up
• Maxxair fan + 12V fan
• Front runner roof racks & Dometic awning.
• 240V power points, 12V/USB charging
• Side window for airflow and ocean views
• Panelled ceiling, timber-tone floor, white ply cabinetry

Every Hutch build is custom-designed around how you actually travel. Books are open for 2027! Reach out at info@hutchcampers.com.au to start the conversation.

$We finished our study wardrobe quite a while ago, but never properly shared how we made it. We wanted something completely custom for the room, but having it professionally made would have been considerably more expensive. Neither of us had any cabinetmaking experience, so we decided to give it a go ourselves. We designed the wardrobe, worked out the individual panel sizes and ordered the oak-veneered boards cut to our dimensions by Plyco. That meant we didn’t need the machinery to cut full sheets ourselves, which made the whole project much more manageable. We’re not going to pretend it was quick or easy. It took a lot of time, patience and figuring things out as we went. But we ended up with a fully custom wardrobe for a fraction of what we’d have paid to have it made, with the obvious trade-off being our own time and labour. We thought it would be worth sharing the process in case it encourages someone else to try something they’ve always assumed they’d need a professional for. We’ll cover what worked, what didn’t and what we’d do differently. This first part is about the design, ordering the materials and getting the first cabinets assembled. Next up: the rest of the assembly, hinges and internal lighting.$
