AURA: When Valentino Couture Becomes a Work of Art

In Rome, Valentino Garavani’s archive enters into a surreal conversation with the paintings of Ewa Juszkiewicz.

At PM23, steps away from Piazza di Spagna, fashion and painting come together in AURA, the latest exhibition presented by the Fondazione Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti.

The exhibition brings together 38 archival Valentino creations and 26 works by Polish artist Ewa Juszkiewicz, known for her mysterious reinterpretations of traditional female portraiture.

Juszkiewicz often conceals her subjects’ faces beneath flowers, fabrics, hair and organic forms. Her paintings feel both historical and surreal: familiar portraits transformed into something entirely new.

Valentino approached the female figure through silhouette, color, embroidery and volume. Placed beside Juszkiewicz’s paintings, the gowns begin to feel almost like three-dimensional portraits themselves.

One of the exhibition’s central encounters revolves around Valentino’s most recognizable color.

For AURA, Juszkiewicz created A Portrait in Valentino Red, inspired by a Valentino Haute Couture gown from the Autumn/Winter 2007–08 collection. In the painting, red fabric overtakes the woman’s face, recalling petals, folds and an oversized bow. Nearby, the original couture dress translates that same visual language into fabric and silhouette.

Rather than simply placing fashion beside art, AURA reveals how both disciplines communicate through color, texture, proportion and movement.

38 Valentino creations. 26 works of art. One extraordinary dialogue.

The opening of AURA, the new exhibition by @fondazionevggg and Giancarlo Giammetti at @pm23official , challenges the very idea of beauty.

Through @ewa_juszkiewicz faceless portraits and Valentino’s iconic creations, beauty breaks free from convention and takes on a whole new identity.

Valentino.
