Today my stepfather Henry Miller would have been 103.

My first job was working at his elegant clothing store in downtown Hartford CT., and the lessons that came out of the experience have proven to be more valuable than the $126 I took home for 5 days of work back in ’78.

I was used to wearing neckties, as my schools required them, so it was no big stretch for me to have to wear one to work each day. I had learned to tie one while in a full sprint on frozen pathways that led to the dining hall, lest I be denied access to the boarding school fare. A tie was required for entry to dinner.

My sons have heard me say a million times, a necktie is powerful piece of fabric. It changes the way people see you, it projects legitimacy, seriousness and respect, it describes forethought, attitude and intention. Wildly variable, it can also convey either conformity or originality.

Every necktie represents an idea, and selling them requires a positioning of the idea against the backdrop of a customer’s previous experience, and their personal style. In this sense I have learned that all ideas are little more than neckties. Getting people to sign on, make a commitment, believe in the tie, and put it around their own neck, is indistinguishable from pitching a script, an idea for a project, and having people back you up. There is a risk here, is it far-fetched? Too trendy ? Or is it the perfect nudge forward out of expectation? We have no choice but to take the risk if we wish to do new things, to be seen as kooky at first, until everyone is walking around in wide ties again.

This old tie below belonged to Henry and I will wear it again today, as I have many times since he passed away in 2003. It is a talisman, it’s tattered ends only enhance it’s power. I will stand up straighter, smile more confidently and make sounder decisions today with it around my neck. Thank you Peter Pammy and Suzanne for sharing Henry with me.
