To say, I am thrilled to share this video is, again, an understatement. I haven’t looked through these pictures in ages, and I soon realized that it was, yet again, a guardian angel, presumably my mom, that made sure I looked at it today. To see what family truly is, those who show up and support, check in with kindness, and just provide unconditional love, is exactly what my Balinese friends & family reminded me of today. Some of these people in this video, literally risked their life for me. As a writer and a storyteller, I’m not supposed to use the word “literally”. But they literally did and 10 years later they still check in on me and make sure I’m happy and I love them for that. I will always wish them health wealth and love. As for these strangers to friends, that has been my story my whole life. The number of friends and Anam Cara’s I’ve had in my life are more than others and it’s simply because I don’t judge. I don’t tell unkind stories. I tell facts when I’m a subject matter expert on the topic and when I’m not, well, I keep my lips zipped. And I look around stunned, as some of you can change a diaper, but can’t change a ZIP Code, or any code for that matter (while this ass is agile), and yet you think you know everything. To my beautiful friends in Bali, to say, I am grateful for meeting each and every one of you, and every single part of that experience, is what is gonna make book two Gold!. Gold, Jerry! It was supposed to be called Bawling in Bali. That has now changed. Book 2 will be called Trash; it’s time to take it out. And some of you, by golly, you might recognize yourselves. Enjoy your Mother’s Day all! For I know this was the best day of my life and so many better days to come! To those who have stood by me, by golly, you’re all Saints! Let’s go and have one hell of a good time now! To my Mom, I remember writing that note on the wall. It was 3 1/2 years since you passed, but I can say what I felt at that moment was this… Freedom♥️🌈👠 Love you, Mom! Thank you for the blessings. Thank you for the guidance. And thank you for your wisdom for it changed my entire life for the better

My birthday came a few days early this year, when my kids surprised me with an incredible backyard picnic with some of my very favorite people. They surrounded me with love and good food and laughs and a few tears. They showed me in real time that although I had felt alone on many days this year, I actually was always being held up by a tribe of people who care deeply for me. My daughter Olivia planned and plotted for months and her brother Teddy supported her efforts gallantly (he generously says it was a 90/10 effort). Together they pulled off a day that I’ll never forget. I love them so deeply and they reflected that back to me a million-fold. Thanks to them and my friends who transformed my backyard into a magical vision with oodles of food that I didn’t make, flowers I didn’t arrange, lanterns I didn’t hang, drinks I didn’t pour and cakes I didn’t bake! I would have loved a time lapse of everyone scrambling around working together in the hour I was “at coffee with Uncle Phil.” So many little details: Primo’s donuts, cilantro in the butter, watercolor of our house, a signature cocktail, my colorful mismatched linens, Olivia’s speech/eulogy IYKYK. Priceless. This year, when I feel low, I will definitely remember the love I felt this day and it will keep me afloat till I can reach the shore again. Damn, I love my people. Let the wild rumpus begin! My Personal Bartender came home and whipped up Christmasy Celery Stalks for us all. And by us all I mean that our 2021 holiday party was one other family for an Italian Christmas dinner. That makes me feel safe and also let’s me enjoy people in a way a big party never lets you do. Connection is more important than ever to me. We had such a good time that I only had before and after pictures. No food.
