POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Thanks for checking out the video from our @pocketsizedseries concert at @paperbirchbooks!

Over 400 views, so we’ve almost 10X the tiny little audience that we were able to squeeeeeeze into that small room.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ll find the link in my bio.

Looking forward to more music in this room, and these people! Keep your eyes peeled for some upcoming show announcements. . .

In the meantime, you can catch @mr.leshan and I THIS THURSDAY at @mimibar_yeg kicking off my new Global music series, Agogô.

[This is a song by @emayarchaic, one of the rappers the Blacktet backed up for this show. I’m not 100% sure how I met Mubarik. Maybe through our friend Andrew (trombonist extraordinaire @noakes) or maybe just through the scene. Whatever the case, I’m honoured to work with such a BRILLIANT artist. His pen is up there with the best of all of them. He’s wrong about the jollof wars, but we’ll let that slide]

After a busy summer, the Pocket Sized-Series has wrapped up our first season! The shows have happened, but for those who missed it, we have some videos to share! First up is the @biboye.onanuga Blacktet, with @morganxalicia, @mr.leshan, and @natekeyz123 feat. @kazmega, @bigpixelmrglitch and @emayarchaic.

In April, these leading voices in Edmonton’s jazz and hip hop scenes came together to demonstrate the compatibility of these two styles, resulting in an elevated, contemporary sound. What you’re hearing is audio from the show! Link in bio!

I had the pleasure of working on this delightful series this year! Awesome to get to hear new music and get to know more amazing musicians in our city.
Check out the recorded concert videos on the Pocket Sized Series YouTube page.

So much rain!!! Hope everyone’s basements aren’t too soggy!!

This project made me so happy. Here’s @myles_belland_studios bringing the vibes

So happy to be working with @amplifystalbert again! Im helping to mentor the creation of 5 music/poetry videos, and I can’t wait to share more!

Interview day with @myles_belland_studios in Red Deer

I’m really proud of this little garden I’ve expanded this year! Every time I look there’s at least 1 happy, fluffy flower bee, so that feels like true success🐝

Final reports filed. Project complete. But is the story really over? 📝

At Bird Creatives, we believe the most meaningful community impact often shows up long after the “final” reports are complete, and we've built our process around capturing it.

In our latest blog, we share how we went beyond standard reporting while managing the Alberta Music Cities Grant Program for West Anthem, and what we learned about measuring impact that actually matters.

If you work in program design, grant management, or community development, this one's for you! Blog in the link in our bio.

In February, @pocketsizedseries invited me to shoot behind the scenes photos of their first show featuring @mbirarenaissance and what a great time it was! Here's some of the shots and BTS footage from the show.

Thank you to @paperbirchbooks for having me and hosting this amazing series. I can't wait for the next one!

We’re back this month with a special show. The @biboye.onanuga Blacktet will be performing @paperbirchbooks this Saturday, April 18th!
This show will be unique, with three of Edmonton’s finest rappers featured alongside the band (@iamjustmoe , @kazmega , @emayarchaic) Our final video will showcase songs by all three of these artists!

Over the next six months, you can expect a great, intimate show every third Saturday of the month, featuring some of Edmonton’s finest musicians! Things will be cozy; only 35 tickets will be available and our friends @paperbirchbooks will be selling coffees to go along with the music. A few weeks later, we’ll release a great live video showcasing some of the night’s magic!

Tickets: $20, link in bio

Poster by @maaikelynnn

About the Blacktet:

The Biboye Onanuga Blacktet is an all-Black ensemble rooted in Edmonton’s jazz and Black American Music scene. Led by drummer Biboye Onanuga, the group brings together some of the city’s most compelling musicians and voices to explore the intersection of jazz, and hip-hop through original compositions, reimagined repertoire, and deep collective improvisation.
The Blacktet has built a reputation for bold, immersive concerts through an annual February residency at the Yardbird Suite, now entering its fourth consecutive year, where the band has presented sold-out J Dilla tributes to growing audiences. Saturday’s show marks something new: the Blacktet’s first performance outside of that residency, and their most intimate yet — 35 tickets, a bookstore, and no buffer between the band and the room. Joining the ensemble are Just Moe, Kaz Mega, and N.K. Archaich — three MCs who represent the best of Edmonton’s rap scene, and frequent collaborators of Biboye’s both on and off the stage.

What do you get when you squeeze the audience into a bookshop and skip sound systems? An intimate and memorable experience that had us all singing along.

We checked out the @pocketsizedseries and I’m hooked! Big Sky Country by @paranormallory was already something I was hoping would be played… but her intro had me in my feels. After years away from Alberta, it has been a jolt to return and find so many people at odds here. Her vision of there being room for us all was deeply moving.
