Last Friday, the National Youth Choir of Canada @choralcanada wrapped their “Sharing Our Voices” 2026 BC Tour with a concert in Victoria presented by @podiumconference.

In #PurpleAndProud fashion, our current @westernuniversity students and @westernualumni posed for a photo outside. And because we love when alumni and students are able to connect through music, we are thrilled to highlight our connections in this year’s choir! 💜

Our Fern Hill Chorus shared their program at PODIUM this past week, and the response has been overwhelming. We are so incredibly proud of what these students brought to the stage.

“Every human on that stage was completely engaged… a highlight of the conference.”
“Touching, uplifting and truly inspiring.”
“Sounded incredibly special.”
“One of the best moments of the conference.”

These students showed what it means to sing with focus, joy, and a real connection to the music and to each other.

We’re sharing a few moments here, and we’ve included the full performance from our family and friends concert before we left for those who would like to watch. Link is in our bio!

We couldn’t be prouder of our students 💚🎶

Our tour to Victoria has come to an end, and it was a wild one. On Thursday morning, the majority of our group were at the YEG Airport at 5 AM, waiting at the gate for our 6:15 AM flight. High winds in Edmonton caused all flights to be delayed and eventually cancelled. Suddenly we had 35 choristers, support people, staff and volunteers all trying to frantically rebook flights (along with every other person at the airport).

Some of our group were finally able to get on various flights that arrived in Victoria between 12 - 18 hours later. But we had 7 singers and 5 support people who were supposed to be with us on this tour but ultimately couldn’t find a flight that had seats or that could accommodate them.

We are devastated that they were not able to join us at Podium, our first interprovincial tour in 30 years, because it means so much for us to be together as a group. To those integral members of our choir - we love you, and we missed you so much. We didn’t know if we were going to be able to sing in our concerts on Friday, but our group rallied and we were so grateful to members of the UBC Singers, and special guest Sherryl Sewepagaham, who joined us on stage for some pieces.

Our singers worked so hard to prepare for this tour, and we are extremely proud of how resilient and positive everyone was throughout the trip. Thank you, Podium, for giving us this opportunity to share our vision of what inclusion and accessibility can look like in the choral community.

As I fly home from Podium, I keep coming back to one feeling… gratitude.

Gratitude for the colleagues who made this experience possible. For the families who supported every step of the journey. For the Canadian composers who shared not only their beautiful music, but their time, encouragement, and insight with our students.

But most of all, I am so deeply proud of these incredible kids.

Before our concerts, we talked about what it means to be a team. That the magic comes from trust, from believing in each other, and from showing up fully for the music and for one another. They embraced all of it. Every moment. I couldn’t be more proud of what they shared.

It is such a privilege to do this work with them.

To my colleagues, thank you. Your support, encouragement, and belief have shaped me in more ways than I can say. I’m so grateful to be part of this community.

@podiumconference , thank you for an unforgettable experience 💚🎶✈️

From the Rotunda in our Provincial legislature to the beauty of St. Andrew’s Cathedral and the Royal Museum — every space carried its own kind of magic. What a privilege to fill these incredible venues with music. This is a day we won’t soon forget thanks to @podiumconference

Sad to be leaving #Podium2026, but thankful for all the wonderful sights, sounds, and meals I've shared with new friends here in Victoria. Many thanks to the Choral Canada and Podium leadership for the opportunity to present; I'm looking forward to return trips in the future, and lots more international collaborations!

The UVic School of Music is thrilled to be a sponsor of the 2026 Podium Conference & Festival! 🎶

We’re especially proud of the incredible UVic community members helping bring this national choral celebration to life:

✨ Faculty member Adam Con is serving as Festival Co-Chair
✨ 4th year student Sadie Karlsson is Volunteer Coordinator
✨ Music students are supporting events as volunteers and with tech support throughout the festival
✨ Alum Carrie Tennant is directing the Vancouver Youth Choir concert — fresh off their historic win at the prestigious CORK International Choral Festival, where they received the highest marks in the festival’s 71-year history
✨ Two UVic students are performing with the National Youth Choir of Canada

And don’t miss the UVic Vocal Jazz ensemble in a special pop-up concert this Sunday at 12:30pm in the MacLaurin A-Wing!

We can’t wait to celebrate music, collaboration, and community at Podium 2026. 🎤
