“I’ve never struggled with my identity because growing up I had my mother teach me all I needed to know about who I was and where I come from. I grew up feeling proud of who I am and my diversity. I am Tahitian, Tongan and Cook Islander, and I am grateful that I can identify with a unique blend of Polynesian cultures. “
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, but grew up in Tahiti and the Cook Islands, this is where Poevai feels most at home and most grounded. Her Tongan lineage comes from her father, and although she says she didn’t spend much of her life journey with her father, it’s a part of her journey today to reconnect and learn more about her Tongan culture.
“I’ve loved making jewelry since I was a young child too.” Running her own business today designing and hand making special pieces with our Polynesian black pearls showing her artistic abilities, and a reflection of the passion she has for her cultures.
Our identity is such an important piece to our life puzzle. We get to understand not only where we have come from, but why we are the way we are, and giving us a sense of belonging and community, something that humans naturally need. We have our own way of making or creating things. We use our natural resources in the most beautiful ways.

“Something I think the world needs more of is healing and we need to re-evaluate what is essential to life. Healing starts from yourself and your surroundings. In recent years I believe we’ve lost track of what is essential to us and we’ve focused on fear.” As indigenous peoples we were always closely intertwined with our environment. We knew how to live in balance and harmony, and preserve the environment to enable survival for all living things. 💚
