Former NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas believes highlights can inspire young players, but full games help them understand what created the play in the first place.

A highlight may show the finish - a made shot, a crossover, or a nifty pass. However, it does not always show how a player created the advantage. Thomas says watching full games allows players to study how someone gets to their spots, reads the defense, and recognizes the counters available to them and, over time, that type of study can help build a stronger basketball IQ.

That approach was a major part of his own development. Thomas said he watched college and NBA basketball whenever it was on, studied his favorite players, and pictured himself in the same situations. So, when he got into the gym or faced a similar moment in a game, he already had a reference point for what he could try.

For young players, film study does not have to begin with complex breakdowns. It can start with watching a full game, choosing one player to follow, and paying attention to the actions before the highlight: how they move without the ball, what they see in pick-and-roll, and how they respond to a defender.

Isaiah Thomas says the Spurs would’ve won the NBA Finals if they kept Chris Paul 👀

“I believe if they had Chris Paul on this roster, they would’ve won the Finals… He doesn’t even have to give valuable minutes. His experience and who he is would’ve helped De’Aaron Fox, Castle, Harper. He would’ve slowed that whole team’s mind down in those situations where it’s time to execute.”
