Chicago has a complicated relationship with its own talent.

We’ll claim someone after they blow up somewhere else. We’ll wear the merch, quote the interviews. But we struggle to crown people while they’re still here: building, grinding, trying to make it work in a city that doesn’t have the infrastructure to launch them the way New York or LA does.

For three years, we’ve been saying Chicago fashion deserves the same infrastructure as the cities that poach our talent. A juried ceremony. An elevated room. Decision-makers at the table, not just in the crowd.

Chicago Fashion Awards was the experiment: What if we stopped waiting for permission? What if we built the table?

There’s a moment right before doors open when the room is still empty. Chairs lined up. Lights set. Stage ready. And it’s just you and the thing you’ve been building in your head for months: now real, now physical, now about to be judged by the people you built it for.

I stood backstage at MCA on December 13 and felt that. Not nerves. Something closer to vertigo.

And then they came. 300 people. Designers, buyers, stylists, agency leads, photographers, PR. The whole ecosystem in one room. Not because they had to. Because they wanted to be there.

What stuck with me wasn’t the applause. It was the conversations afterward. The “I didn’t know this existed here” from someone who’s been here for years. The “Thank you for doing this” from a designer who’s been building in silence.

That’s the thing about infrastructure work. You can’t predict if it’ll catch. You just build it as well as you can, open the doors, and see if people trust it enough to show up.

They did.

That’s the work. Not the event; the infrastructure. The proof that we’re not waiting anymore.

First one’s done. Now we build the next ten years.

Trophy Design for the Inaugural CHICAGO FASHION AWARDS. Hosted by @chicagofashioncoalition at @mcachicago. 🏆💫

For the City in Bloom theme, we drew from Chicago’s past, present, and future to create a trophy rooted in symbolism that reflects the CFC and its mission.✨️🌆

Ceres, The faceless goddess atop the Board of Trade is abstracted into a flowing gold figure, symbolizing Chicago’s agricultural and industrial foundations 🏗. The 6-pointed star blooms like a flower, embodying the grit, strength, and innovation of the people who built Chicago into what it is today💐. The hexagonal base is the geometric completion of the star, symbolizing the infrastructure that enables creativity and how the next generation builds upon past cultural achievements🌌.

Material: Carbon steel, Golden powder coating, Walnut
