POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Life has been moving pretty fast lately. One week seems to turn into the next before I’ve really had time to think about it, and I’ve been trying to get better at noticing life while it’s happening. I’ve spent a lot of energy wondering what was next, what I should be doing and when everything would finally make a little more sense.

Lately I’ve been putting less pressure on myself to figure out exactly what my life is supposed to look like. Plans change, people come and go, I change my mind constantly and I’m still learning where my energy belongs. Somewhere in the middle of all of that, I’ve started building a life I really like living.

Part of that has meant learning to give myself some of the same patience I’ve spent so much of my life giving to everyone else. I’m saying no more often without feeling like I owe someone an explanation and becoming more protective of what I give my time to.

I’ve also started appreciating the people who make room for me without making friendship feel like something I have to earn. Boundaries are still something I’m figuring out, but sometimes choosing myself means knowing when to step away.

People are going to have opinions about you and sometimes decide who you are without really knowing you. You don’t have to spend your energy correcting every version of you that exists in someone else’s head. Give that energy to the people and parts of your life that actually feel worth being present for.

I’m trying to let things be good without immediately wondering what comes after them. Not everything needs to lead somewhere, and I don’t need to keep chasing the next thing just because sitting still has never come naturally to me.

I’m still figuring a lot of it out, but I know this much. You don’t need everyone to understand you, and your life doesn’t have to make perfect sense before you’re allowed to enjoy it. You might already be living more of the life you were looking for than you realized.

For Briday weekend, we’re making things a little more permanent. Reed has done every single one of my tattoos, so it feels especially fitting that he’s joining the birthday festivities this year. For Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29 only, he’s doing a special flash sale!

A portion of the proceeds from the flash sale will go toward helping her rebuild her life in Vietnam after she was deported in May.

So if you’ve been waiting for a sign to get a new tattoo, this might be it. Come get something permanent from Briday weekend, support an artist I’ve trusted with my skin for years and help us support my mom at the same time.

And yes, I’m absolutely trying to convince some to get matching tattoos.

At first glance, the annual Peace in the Streets Block Party looked like a summer celebration, yet beneath the laughter and festivities was a purpose that brought hundreds together. Hosted by SoWe , THE ENDALL MOVEMENT, and CJ’s Hoop for Hope, the event served as both a celebration of community and a call to action against gun violence.

That balance is what has made Peace in the Streets such a meaningful tradition in Lancaster. It acknowledges loss without allowing loss to define the future. It creates space for grief while also making room for hope.

This year’s gathering once again honored the memory of Kendell Cook, who was shot and killed at GQ Barber Shop in 2021.

His life and legacy remain at the heart of THE ENDALL MOVEMENT’s work to raise awareness about the impact of gun violence and support efforts aimed at prevention and healing. Throughout the event, attendees had opportunities to learn about local resources, connect with community organizations, and reflect on the lives lost to violence.

For many, the event was personal. Nearly everyone knows someone whose life has been touched by gun violence, whether directly or through someone they care about.

Yet the atmosphere never felt defined by tragedy. Instead, it reflected something Lancaster does exceptionally well. People showed up for one another.

More than 25 community partners participated, offering resources, information, and opportunities for residents to connect with organizations working every day to strengthen Lancaster. The event demonstrated that addressing violence is not the responsibility of any one group.

Creating safer communities requires prevention, investment, and long-term commitment. It also requires trust. People are more likely to support one another when they know one another, and stronger relationships help create stronger neighborhoods.

Lancaster has faced difficult moments, as every city does. Yet gatherings like this reveal another side of the community. One that refuses to be defined by tragedy alone.

By the end of the day, the event offered a reminder that healing and hope often begin with people willing to show up for one another.

Flash tattoos are usually quick decisions. You pick a design, take a seat, and walk away with something permanent. But these feel different.

As part of the upcoming Grand Opening of The @stevensandsmithcenter, @pokedup is bringing flash tattoos to the community during the Block Party on Saturday, May 2 at @truenorthpa

Here’s a sneak peek of the designs you could get! At the center of it all is a simple symbol, the ampersand. It reflects the spirit of the museum itself, the “and” that connects everything it stands for. Stevens & Smith. Freedom & equality. Hope & courage. History & democracy.

Members of the LancasterHistory team were the first to get theirs, but it wasn’t just about the tattoo. It was about choice. Choosing to mark a moment. Choosing to engage with history in a way that doesn’t stay external.

These tattoos offer a glimpse into the spirit of the Center. Not something distant or untouchable, but something lived and personal. Because getting a tattoo, even a small one, asks you to be present. You choose it. You sit with it. You carry it after.

And that feels aligned with everything this Center stands for. History is something you decide how to hold, and what you carry forward.

On Saturday, May 2, you’ll have the option to do exactly that.
