14 hours. Mud, rain, miles, and a lot of moments where I questioned whether I could keep going. Thank you, Unbound. This wasn’t my fastest gravel race, and it definitely wasn’t my smoothest, but it was the longest I’ve ever been out on a bike and one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced. What I expected to be a much shorter day turned into 14 hours of pushing through conditions, bike mechanical issues that tested my limits both physically and mentally. The rain, mud, hike-a-bike sections, mechanical challenges, and endless miles reminded me that sometimes success isn’t about a finish time it’s about refusing to quit. Also grateful for every rider, volunteer, spectator, and supporter who helped make this event what it is. 15,000 miles of the Tarmac SL5. The best bike I’ve ever owned and the most mileage I’ve ever put on a single bicycle. I hit this milestone at the end of a 234 mile week, my biggest week since Covid at least (by a long shot). This bike has been from Colorado Rocky Mountains to the coast of Carolina, from Mount Evans to the Arizona desert (and mountains), to the Appalachians of Tennessee and Virginia, it’s been in an ambulance with me, and so much more. Often loved and maintained by @kylerohling, bike fit twice by @jasonwilliams77, upgraded with @envecomposites everything along the way. What a rig. P.S. How could I forget? Adventures in the Black Mountain Wild Forest. Sometimes a night of bike camping is all you really need. We didn't ride as much as planned due to rare, miserable heat in the Old Forge region (90s and sticky). The almost 4L of water on the bike, (you can't see the 24oz in the left feed bag) that seems excessive was getting used per hour by the two of us. Nevertheless the riding was fun and the camping almost perfect (that fire pit...🔥). This unit is mix of limited but fantastic gravel, old rail beds, rugged hiking trails, and rugged or swampy snowmobile trails. Most of it is rideable with some persistence (the hiking trails are blue rated biking) or willingness to hike-a-bike. The crux, like every unit in the Adirondacks Forest Preserve, unmaintained trails with frequent blowdown (sometimes every 20ft). Often where a trail is perfectly rideable, you have to dismount and thread through blowdown. The BRWF is no exception. #bikepacking #bikecamping #adk #Adirondacks #newyork
