Love, Literature and Otherness explores love as an experience of queer resistance by examining how literary forms embody radical otherness, complexity, and openness. Countering sociological narratives that frame contemporary romantic relationships through calculation and decline, the conference draws on the literary philosophy of Hélène Cixous and Jacques Derrida to propose a speculative, non-dystopian framework for thinking about love. Pol Guasch (Tarragona, 1997) is the author of Napalm in the Heart (Llibres Anagrama Novel Award 2021), which was chosen as one of the best books of 2024 by The New Yorker: “Electrifying... A singular voice, sweet and eruptive at the same time, fresh and already mature: a happy deflagration” (Ariane Singer, Le Monde), from In the Hands, Paradise Burns: “A beautiful story in a disastrous setting, between Sarah Kane and Vivian Gornick. A wonderful book that takes the hope of friendship to the end of the world” (Alana S. Portero) and Reliquia: “A beautiful book, hard but malleable at the same time; in his narration and his reflections there is an authenticity that hurts” (Sara Mesa). He has written the books of poems Tanta gana (Francesc Garriga Prize 2018) and La part del foc (López-Picó Prize 2021, translated into Spanish). His work has been translated into thirteen languages. Joanot Martorell (Valencian: [dʒuaˈnɔd maɾtoˈɾeʎ]; c. 1410-1465) was a Valencian knight and writer, best known as the author of Tirant lo Blanc, a novel written in Catalan/Valencian and published in Valencia in 1490. @polgua @officialqmul @catalanqmul • 📆 Tuesday 17 Nov 🕢 6:30pm 📍 QMUL ArtsOne - Room 1.28 🎟️ https://www.eventbrite.com/e/joanot-martorell-lecture-2026-pol-guasch-tickets-2003709928334?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true

“PARADISE BURNS calls out the broader intolerance and confronts the many manifestations of objective suffering, but Guasch doesn’t fixate on these tragedies. He allows for the existence of a paradise to be lost, and the possibility, however tenuous, of hope for those who survive it.” Spanish author Pol Guasch’s second novel, PARADISE BURNS is at once a story told through quantum superposition, a profound exploration of existential grief, and a moving testament to the unequivocal power of friendship. Translated from Catalan by Mara Faye Lethem, the book delves into a deep platonic love shared between two queer young adults in 1980s Catalonia as the AIDS epidemic spreads. This Tuesday on WWB, critic Cory Oldweiler delivers a glowing review of Guasch’s latest work, writing on the novel’s unique basis in “a specific past and a theoretical future,” its poetic approach to bearing remembrance, and its poignant deliverance of innumerable “devastating truths.” Head to the link in our bio to read the full review, and discover many more reviews of new literature in translation on our website. Happy publication day to my dearest @polgua’s second novel, PARADISE BURNS, translated by Mara Faye Lethem—a novel of extraordinary sensitivity, sensuality, originality, and heart. Pol is perhaps Spain’s most celebrated young writer, for good reason; this book is as ambitious as any you’ll read, a looping and lyrical exploration of friendship at the end of the world, of queer survival, of ecological horror and hope. It’s simply unreal. I love you @polgua and I am so happy to publish you for the past present and future (next book, his memoir, in 2028!!!). First published by @anagramaeditor, soon by @presspeninsula in the UK and others across the world. Cover by @thomcolligan PR by @laurenkhutton and wonderful agents @casanovaslynch !!!!!!

No me malinterpretéis, lo he valorado muchísimo.
