💧 This #ImagineADayWithoutWater, we’re highlighting how PolicyLink, which anchors the #WECRCaucus, is advancing #WaterAffordabilityForAll.

Speaking about @reprashida and @repdingell ‘s push for permanent federal water assistance, @policylink ‘s Yasmin Zaerpoor emphasized the national need: an estimated 30 to 48 million people live in households facing unaffordable water bills.

The Caucus helped inform the Water Access and Affordability Act, which would establish permanent assistance for low-income households’ water and wastewater bills and protect participating families from shutoffs.

Keeping water safe requires investment, but families already facing unaffordable bills cannot shoulder the cost. Federal assistance and investment in public water systems can help keep water within reach.

💧 A water shutoff takes away a family’s ability to cook dinner, bathe their children, and care for themselves at home. No one should lose those necessities because they cannot afford the bill.

Everyone has a right to #SafeAffordableWater, at any income. Protecting that right takes sustained federal investment in public water systems, rates that account for household income, and permanent federal water assistance.

Keeping water safe and affordable is a public responsibility. Our policies should ensure no family has to choose between water and other essentials.

The midterms are coming, and with them, the promises.
Folks doing this work are doing critical work — this is no critique of that.

I’m reflecting on how we relate to those promises.
We’re asking people to trust elections when they haven’t seen them deliver, especially with 85 million of us struggling to make ends meet. That’s why we need a proactive governing agenda that delivers, and earns trust over and over again.

That’s what I share in this video. In the chaos that surrounds us, I stay grounded because I know who I serve, and stay focused on our ultimate goal: to govern for all. That means advancing a vision today for the long term — not for two years, but for the generations to come.

Imagine if my grandchildren’s generation could take for granted that governing institutions and campaigns would deliver on their promises — and would have to answer for it if they didn’t. What would have to be true for that to happen?

💧 H2O INTRO 👤 Meet Yasmin Zaerpoor, Director of Water Equity and Climate Resilience at PolicyLink.

For millions of Americans, access to safe water is not only a question of infrastructure. It is also a question of affordability, governance, and equity.

Zaerpoor says PolicyLink has spent years advocating for affordable, safe water for everyone. She points to two stark numbers: 2.2 million people are living without water, while 42 million cannot afford their water bills—a challenge she says will grow unless the country invests in its water systems.

But she argues the solution cannot come from any one organization or sector.

Addressing water inequity, Zaerpoor says, requires collaboration across organizations and across sectors. And she frames the problem as more than a technical or financial challenge: when this many people lack access to water, she says, it is also a governance failure.

That perspective puts equity at the center of the broader conversation about how the U.S. invests in, manages, and governs its water systems.

It’s not enough to win power. We have to know what we’re going to DO with it — and what we’re demanding from the people elected to represent us.

People are TIRED of empty promises. 😴

I saw that frustration up close when I traveled through seven battleground states during the 2024 election. In West Philly, people challenged me directly: Where is the hope? Where is the change?

That question has stayed with me.

We joined @policylink in MD for "We Are The Founders: Writing the Unfinished Story of Our Democracy" Summit 2026. It was a beautiful opportunity to connect with other social justice leaders from across the country. There were sessions on Governing for All, Governing Tool's for People—Centered Policy Design, Belonging and the Promise of Democracy, and Nation—Building in the Future Tense, just to name a few.
