✨LONG POST✨ Last night was a magical whirlwind! I still haven’t had time to fully process what it felt like to perform on the Weill Recital Hall stage at Carnegie Hall.

What I can absolutely recall is the stillness of the room as @dr_tanyaradzwa opened our set on mbira—how it calmed the space and opened the path for @orelien67 and me to move into song together.

As we shared a few selections from my album, “African Romances,” there was applause before we could even finish the set. I loved that. Break the rules! I looked out into the audience knowing that friends were there supporting me, and I felt so much love in that room. And to all of you who couldn’t be there but sent messages, well wishes, and encouragement from afar—thank you. I felt that support, too.

But truly, the best part of the night was making my Carnegie Hall debut with two people who are very dear to me.

Tanyaradzwa—my sister now for 10 years, after meeting at our doctoral scholarship vocal competition (I won first place, she won second!)—and Aurelien, a most faithful and generous collaborator and an incredible pianist. Thank you both for keeping this entire experience stress-free, moving with the very fast flow, and simply making beautiful music with me.

And finally, thank you, @rasapiano! First of all, you are INCREDIBLE, and I so enjoyed watching you play. What a night you pulled together! I’m deeply grateful for the invitation to share Coleridge-Taylor’s rare songs and for our shared dedication to bringing unheard and overlooked voices in classical music back into listeners ears.

To everyone I met during this wonderfully fast-paced evening, thank you for your kind words and for receiving our heartfelt performance so warmly.

For now, enjoy a few photos from the whirlwind. I believe some official photos will be coming soon.

And if you’d like to hear/learn more of the music we shared last night, I invite you to listen to “African Romances” at the link in my bio.

🌎They were just 22 and 25 in 1897, living an ocean apart—Paul Laurence Dunbar in Dayton, Ohio, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor in London. An incredible meeting in London sparked a friendship, and African Romances, Op. 17 was born.

Nearly 130 years later, I have the honor of bringing a new voice to this rarely recorded work that helped lay the foundation for the Black art song tradition.
