💥 MICROBIOME RESTAURANT will premiere at IDFA DocLab 2026 and is included in the competition for Immersive Non-Fiction 💥

We are extremely proud to present our project at the prestigious International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.
@idfafestival @idfadoclab

𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙩 is a multisensory XR dining experience that makes this invisible world visceral, inviting you to eat, feel, and fundamentally rethink what it means to be human.

The performance experiences are speculative, but scientifically validated. They give a visceral sense of just how much established (Western, liberal, colonial) ideas about human autonomy and reason conflict with our biological reality.

Initial concept developed by POLYMORF in collaboration with Hazal Ertürkan. Special thanks to: Anja Lok (Amsterdam UMC), Justin Sonnenburg (Sonnenburg Lab), Elisa Caffrey and De Karpendonkse Hoeve. This project has been supported through funding from the Creative Industries Fund NL, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and Shared Realities program IDFA (CIIIC)
@stimuleringsfonds

Shared Realities is both IDFA DocLab’s 20th-anniversary theme and a two-year research consortium. Our research consortium gathers around the question: how can immersive art bring us together?

We are thrilled to announce the five projects that are supported through that research and join the wider festival program. In vastly different and creative ways, these artists have been thinking about making immersive art more accessible and more about togetherness. You are warmly invited to come experience them at IDFA DocLab this November.

Full program lineup October 13.

From a VR opera that takes to the live stage to a restaurant where your microbes are the guests and a new preservation system that restores older classics.

These projects are made possible with support from the Creative Industries Fund NL, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and CIIIC.

🦠Enjoy a sneak peek from our project Microbiome Restaurant, currently in production 🦠

You are not a single self; you are an ecosystem. The human body is home to trillions of microorganisms, shaping your emotions, decisions, and health in ways that challenge every assumption about individual autonomy and free will.

Microbiome Restaurant is a multisensory XR dining experience that makes this invisible world visceral, inviting you to eat, feel, and fundamentally rethink what it means to be human.

🎙️ NEW INTERVIEW: What’s up Next, 𝗢𝗸𝗸𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻 (part II)?

✨On 26 March 2026 we said goodbye to our 2025-2026 generation of XR Talents. Each of them made a presentation about their work during their Playgrounds Next program and we got to listen to feedback and encouragements from their mentors.

In addition, we asked each of the talents to reflect on their trajectories. Swipe to see some highlights from animation and video artist Okke van Breemen’s presentation.
@okkev.breemen

During his trajectory, Okke was guided by Marcel van Brakel, founder and lead designer at Polymorf
@polymorf.nl @vbrakel
Here is what Marcel had to say about him:

“When I first met Okke he was showing these beautiful serene worlds and amazing aesthetic and photography in film, so I knew straight away he had an artistic eye. I think his focus on the details and on the unvoiced emotions that are part of reality and often not seen, really define and are Okke’s strengths. At the end of our first encounter I remember thinking “this is a very absorptive but silent guy”. He did an awesome job in going on a journey to discover himself and make his personality fit his work. In the same time, he has a very recreative and exploratory view of the world. I am confident he will find his way in an organic manner.”

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘶𝘱 𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘵? is a series of articles and interviews meant to better showcase the trajectories of our Next XR Makers.

We have met the Next Talents 2025-2026 generation in two key moments: at the start of their trajectory – focussing on finding out more about the artists and what they expect from the program - and at the end of their course, discussing the things they picked up on the way.

Read both interviews with Okke via link in @next.playgrounds bio.

CLOT x Six Minutes Past Nine

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲?

Next in the series, @tuceerel examines the growing gap between the promise of VR immersive art and the reality of who actually gets to experience it. By relying more and more on technologically mediated artworks and installations, cultural institutions are unintentionally reproducing the very exclusions they have long struggled to address.

Drawing on two immersive VR projects, 𝙅𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙨 𝙑𝙪: 𝙏𝙪𝙧𝙗𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 (2023) by @benjosephandrews and Emma Roberts, and the multisensory theatrical installation 𝙎𝙮𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙨 by @polymorf.nl, the article shows how, while immersive technologies hold genuine potential — fostering empathy around invisible disabilities, ecological crisis, and embodied difference — their structural conditions simultaneously narrow participation through high ticket prices, limited capacity, technical fragility, and physically demanding interfaces.

The article poses a fundamental curatorial question: if questions of mediation, accessibility, and public engagement remain central to contemporary cultural practice, they cannot be addressed by adopting new technologies alone. It requires rethinking the infrastructures that govern who gets to enter the interface in the first place.
