What goes into creating a hand painted mural?

Every so often I’m allowed to just create and follow the muse, after an initial discussion about key factors (colour, fullness, elements etc).

The client wanted a colonial style vibe, with a cheetah, palm and banana trees, and cheeky monkeys (she’d seen my “Cheeky Monkeys in the Library” wallpaper, and various bespoke monkeys over the years) and definitely wanted some of her own.

Beyond that- I had free reign to create as I saw fit, no sketch or formal plan, with the occasional check in to make sure we were on the same page…and we always were!

It’s often the people you work with that give you the opportunities. This table top was beautifully restored by Pierre @deja.vu.restoration and I gave it two coats of the new Polyvine Poly86 2k clear coat, that finish will last for years to come! #polyvine #poly86

I love working on projects that have personality and push the boundaries a little. It’s all about the details, the finish and bringing a client’s vision to life. Here the brief was to bring the clients personality and love for the weird and wonderful together to make a space that is both opulent and beautiful and truly individual. With the use of wallpaper on the ceilings and reveals and gold leaf middle section of the space tiring the spaces together. Can’t wait to see it fully dressed when this space will truly come alive. Paints used are Classic Burgundy and Black by @benjaminmooreuk

ITS FINISHED!!

Honestly… I shock myself. I really didn’t think I’d finish it before baby arrived, but somehow.. the mother of all deadlines + ADHD gave me the hyperfocus and determination needed to just Get. It. Done.

Considering my last fitted wardrobe build took me about 4/5 months, this was completed in just 2 1/2 weeks start to finish (including decorating the rest of the room, doing some electrical rewiring, panelling and upcycling another unit, as well as taking time out to plan and throw my 5 year old a party in the garden!).

Now with less than a week until my due date, I can finally unpack baby’s clothes, organise his room and actually RELAX for once now this final DIY of my pregnancy is doneeee 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

✨ What a transformation! ✨

Look at that beautiful detailing 😍 There’s something of interest from every angle of this piece!

This solid oak cabinet had such a dark heavy stain and original leaded glass doors. I wanted to bring all that beautiful oak and carved detailing back to life, whilst giving it a much lighter, more contemporary feel.

The transformation included:

🤎 Removing the original leaded glass and replacing it with cane webbing
🤎 Fully stripping back the old stained and varnished finish with @rustinsltd ‘strypit’
🤎 @fusionmineralpaint ‘champlain’ paint wash to create this gorgeous light oak effect, followed by fusions ‘antiquing glaze’ to add depth to the detailing.
🤎 A professional spray finish using Polyvine varnish for a smooth, durable and hard-wearing finish.
🤎 Finished with new handles from @zarahome to complete the look.

The result is a completely one-of-a-kind piece of made-to-last furniture — full of character, beautiful craftsmanship and details you simply can’t find on the high street.
