Sophia Al-Maria’s creative practice is rooted in her exploration of speculative fiction as a tool for recovering erased histories and suppressed voices. On the occasion of her Digital Fellowship, Al-Maria presents a historical fiction in the form of a sonic invocation, specifically conceived for Pompeii Commitment. 🌋 👁️ ‘In the House of the Trembling Eye’ #ithotte 🔥 @aspenartmuseum Closing tomorrow… An epic exhibition, the invitation of a lifetime: to ‘stage’ works borrowed from local Aspen collections in combination with fragments of ancient Roman frescos from the archeological site of Pompeii and my own paintings. 3 floors, 9 rooms, 105 artworks, 73 artists. Organized on the occasion of the museum’ 45th anniversary and celebrating a decade of their building designed by Shigeru Ban. Inspired by my discoveries made while a fellow of @pompeii_commitment in 2022, a residency program that allowed me to visit Pompeii and access hidden treasures. Rising out of Russell’s 2022-2023 Digital Fellowship for Pompeii Commitment.Archaeological Matters, the first long-term, contemporary art programme established by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the author and curator explores ash, filth, dirt, and decay, intersectional with the fetishistic mythos of Pompeii and its destruction in 79 CE by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that receives over two million visitors per year to view its archeological excavation. Russell puts the mass voyeurism, sensation, extraction, and loss of Pompeii—a devastating moment frozen in time—to work. In GAY POMPEII, the site becomes a device with which Russell unspools birth, death, genocide, visual culture, and space-time. The title of this compilation underscores the essence and demand of capitalism: to be carefree in the face of looming extinction. #PCMopening Come un canto funebre, viscerale e profondo, un’antica trenodia greca, che nell’alternanza di cori e voci soliste accompagnavano nell’ultimo saluto il defunto, così la mostra personale “Pompeii Threnody” di Cerith Wyn Evans - che inaugura venerdì 18 luglio all’Antiquarium di Boscoreale - conduce il visitatore in un dialogo inconscio e involontario “con chi e con ciò che, in fondo, continua a vivere a Pompei”, rievocandone la perdurante vitalità della memoria. “Pompeii Threnody” è la prima mostra site-specific del programma @pompeii_commitment. Materie Archeologiche appositamente pensata per l’Antiquarium di Boscoreale e Villa Regina, offrendone una nuova lettura dei luoghi attraverso il linguaggio della contemporaneità. La mostra, a cura di Andrea Viliani con Stella Bottai (@stellabottai), Laura Mariano (@laurazzurra2), Caterina Avataneo (@cateavataneo), sarà aperta al pubblico da sabato 19 luglio 2025 a domenica 11 gennaio 2026. “Pompeii Threnody” esplora la memoria, il tempo e la trasformazione, elementi centrali nell’opera dell’artista gallese, tra i più raffinati e poetici del panorama internazionale. "Leda Was a Swan" is officially online and I could not be more proud! Here is my fav BTS production still of @mariannasimnett in her truest Leda/Swan queen essence. Also, as a tiny spoiler, sharing an excerpt of the text I wrote: "In Simnett’s hands, victim and aggressor wrangle phlegmatically before imploding into one, or perhaps becoming dismembered and stitched back together into a visceral lump made of soft textures and pronounced curves. Complying with feminist reinterpretations of the myth, the swan is defeated in the video, its neck theatrically covered with blood, reclining softly as the spotlight is directed towards Leda’s psychological state. The difference being, in this specific instance, that the monstrous other is Leda herself." Like a funeral chant—visceral and profound—an ancient Greek threnody in which alternating choruses and solo voices accompanied the deceased in their final farewell, “Pompeii Threnody,” the solo exhibition by Cerith Wyn Evans, similarly guides the visitor into an unconscious and involuntary dialogue ‘with those and with that which, deep down, continue to live in Pompeii,’ evoking the enduring vitality of memory. “Pompeii Threnody” explores memory, time, and transformation—central themes in the artist’s practice. Twelve works are on display, ten of which were created specifically for the occasion, forming a suggestive dialogue between archaeological material and contemporary imagination. Among them are nine photo-etchings dedicated to the cypresses of the Sarno plain, evoking the geological and memorial dimensions of the Vesuvian landscape; a light installation inspired by the ceremonial chariot found in Civita Giuliana, featuring the Latin palindrome IN GIRUM IMUS NOCTE ET CONSUMIMUR IGNI (‘We go wandering at night and are consumed by fire’); and two lamp-sculptures shaped like golden palms, installed in the patio of the Antiquarium in dialogue with the architecture of the nearby Villa Regina. “Pompeii Threnody” is the first site-specific exhibition of the program “Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters,” specifically conceived for the Antiquarium of Boscoreale and Villa Regina, offering a new interpretation of these places through the language of contemporaneity.
