As a NYC based illustrator, two of my favorite times of year are September and February. Fashion week last season was a rollercoaster of events, shows, and individuals sharing their unique visions.

I got to capture some of these live on the runway, at pop-ups, and even managed to do a few studies from my favorite artists. In reality though, you can’t find much better reference than riding the subway 🚇

✨ FASHION RE-IMAGINED - [online] Fashion Illustration Masterclass with YUKO: PONTARIVER

New York–based illustrator Yuko Katakawa, known to many as Pontariver of Art Studio Yuko, brings her vibrant, versatile style to this exclusive DDGD masterclass.

In Fashion Reimagined, Yuko will explore how a fashion sketch can be transformed by the techniques we choose. Using specially curated images from the Dropdead Gorgeous Drawing archive as her muse, she’ll show how a single figure can inspire a series of fresh interpretations such as pen & ink, watercolour, collage, mixed media, and expressive fountain pen studies.

Rather than one “right way,” Yuko reveals how fashion illustration can open up into an array of possibilities - each mark, colour, and medium giving the same image a new life. It’s an evening designed to inspire illustrators of all levels to experiment, loosen up, and expand their own drawing vocabulary.

Expect flowing lines, bold colour, and the chance to watch a leading illustrator demonstrate multiple distinctive approaches to fashion drawing in real time.

About the Artist

Yuko Katakawa (Pontariver) is a New York–based illustrator whose work captures the energy and style of fashion in flowing lines and vibrant colour. Through her platform Art Studio Yuko and Instagram handle @pontariver, she shares her unique approach to live fashion sketching, editorial illustration, and experimental mixed media.

During my long Saturday two weeks ago, I was in Dumbo and stopped by Vinyl + Thread (@vinylandthreaddumbo) to check out their vinyl & fashion (highly recommend visiting). While I was there, I met a super cool artist named Matt Jacob Whitman who was working on street fashion sketches right outside the space. It’s amazing the speed at which he executes these portraits and the minimally economical usage of color to convey so much energy and character. Some of the images here, such as the first one, are studies from Art Studio Yuko (@pontariver).
