The real magic doesn’t always happen in the camera

Shooting underwater can be a tricky beast at times, and it’s been quite the challenge over the last 8 years learning how to work with it rather than against it.

Water has a funny way of stealing everything from an image. Color disappears, contrast falls apart, light behaves differently, and sometimes what I saw underwater looks nothing like what comes out of the camera.

But I’ve learned that pressing the shutter is really only half of the process.

Editing is where I get to bring some of that feeling back. Not necessarily to make the image look “perfect,” but to get it closer to what I remember seeing and feeling in that moment.

There’s obviously a line between editing an image and completely changing it, but I’ve never really understood the idea that a photograph is somehow more authentic because it came straight out of camera.

The camera captures what it can. The rest is how I remember it. 🌊

Can you name all the grouper? Epic island strike with my best friends. Starting to really enjoy hunting with a pole spear.
