I just signed up for @midsouthgravel so here are some pics and words from last year. @sglowac and I road tripped through NWA to get some MTB rips under our belt before all the gravel miles in Oklahoma. It was hot and we had a hoot even though we didn’t get to ride with @tweichman. When we got in to Stillwater, the stoke was as high as temperatures. We found the other @handupracing humans and bumped in to other friendly faces. It’s always so fun to catch up with friends from all over the country and enjoy some chill rides and barley pops for a couple days before race day. On Friday, we cheered on our running pals as winds got nuking. As you maybe remember, the winds got downright dangerous. They blew things over, the 50k run got cut shirt for some, and fires started to pop up around town. Eventually, at @stonecloudbrewingstw, @unlearnpavement and the MidSouth team made the tough but only correct call to cancel the Saturday bike races due to the fires and smoke and related uncertainties. Rightfully so, the moods changed as people pondered what to do next and waited to hear updates on conditions for Saturday. The fire crews were able to get most fires under control but not without immense loss in some areas. Saturday morning was slow moving as people checked in with each other and the news. The race organizing team shared some routes they deemed safe fit folks who were still keen to ride and I fell in to that camp for sure. The crew assembled and we enjoyed a delightful ride on those glorious red dirt roads. The route was good and the company was even better. I was especially stoked that our new Idahomies (@andysolo27 and @rideonkp) wanted to ramble with our Minnesotan squad and I sure hope we get to ride together again this year! I’m already looking forward to this spring migration and I think you should considering making the journey too. I’ve got plenty of food and coffee and MTB and touristy shit recommendations to help break up the drive and increase the fun factor. Good luck to all those tackling the Mega MidSouth this weekend!
