No one teaches you how to grieve a loss. No one teaches the people who love and support you what to say to someone who has lost a loved one. No one can truly prepare you for the fact that grief comes in waves.

As I spent my final moments with my mother in her ICU room, I found myself going through a lifetime of memories with her. Not just as the woman who fed me, dressed me, and celebrated every achievement, but as the woman who made sure my siblings and I would be independent, resilient, and strong. She prepared us for how cruel the world could sometimes be.

What she forgot to teach us was how to live without her.

That day came, and it felt like a devastating punch into a new reality that my family and I now have to navigate. I always knew my mother would pass someday, but I never imagined it would be this soon. There are still so many things in life I want to experience and share with her.

I miss my mother more and more as these waves of grief come. It frustrates me how random they are and how they force me to face, over and over again, the reality of her passing.

I miss you, Mom. I would love for you to come visit me somehow.

Thank goodness for our huge community and family. We were able to capture a recording of our family number for you, Mama. I will treasure that forever.

Love you so much. You are missed tremendously.
