“Donnie Baseball” ⚾️
and “The Hitman” 🗽 a couple of nicknames Don Mattingly carried proudly through his big-league career.

Part of my journey in this hobby began with Mattingly’s 1984 Topps rookie card. I was 12 and had been watching baseball for about four years. On my 13th birthday, I opened my gift — inside was that card — a Don Mattingly ’84 Topps RC in a Top Loader. I had been staring at it for months at my local card shop, dreaming it would one day be mine.

From 1984–1989, Mattingly was arguably baseball’s best player — averaging 200+ hits, 115 RBI, 27 HR, 100 runs, and a .327 batting average over six seasons. Defensively, he was elite — 9 Gold Gloves, setting the standard at first base.

Mattingly’s OPS (.938 from ’84–’87) and his 1985 MVP season cemented his legacy as one of the most complete hitters of the decade. Unfortunately, chronic back pain robbed him of his power in his 30s, dropping his production to around 10 HR and 64 RBI per year in the latter half of his career.

He eventually fell off the Hall of Fame ballot in 2015, never receiving more than 20% of the vote — but to many collectors and fans, Donnie Baseball remains a Hall of Fame worthy talent. 💙
