Michel Gabriel | Soul in the Sea 🌊

Underwater photographer, freediver and ocean advocate Michel Gabriel was featured inside GOSS Magazine Issue 91 | Aquatic.

What began as an unexpected stop in Oahu became an entirely new life. Michel went from being terrified of sharks to freediving alongside them — eventually turning her camera toward the underwater world and building a career within the shark diving industry.

“The ocean is the only place where none of my problems exist.”

Through photography and storytelling, Michel now uses the very world she once feared to inspire connection, education and protection — believing that people protect what they learn to love.

Michel is one of the hundreds of women whose stories have filled the pages of GOSS across 100+ issues.

Did you see her bite?! 🫣🫣🫣

We got to meet the famous Nikki and Pistachio in the water and it was exhilarating! We pulled up and they counted one, two, three tigers in the water right before going in.

Last time I swam with sharks I only got to see one tiger for a glimpse and it swam away. These three tiger sharks circled us for thirty minutes and it was magical. I saw the smaller Galapagos below and kept thinking I wanted to see a bigger shark, I must be crazy 🤪

I honestly think everyone should do one of these tours to see that sharks aren’t trying to eat you, they’re just curious to see what we are. After swimming with them, I was so much more at peace in the ocean.

I highly recommend going with @goadventurehawaii_ . Michelle and Mattie were amazing keeping us safe in the water even if it wasn’t the clearest day! This company was small, only 6 of us on the boat at one time which gave it a more intimate experience. They also did great with educating us before getting in the water. If you’re coming to Hawaii, you don’t want to miss this experience of a lifetime!

Tiger sharks have a reputation for being a little mysterious, but seeing one cruise by underwater is pretty unforgettable. That unmistakable striped pattern makes them hard to mistake for anyone else. 🐯🦈
