Three weeks ago today Phat Bottom Girl and I spent our final day and night at the Nanaimo Yacht Club. She also received the ignition system service that Coast Craft Marine had recommended following their pre-purchase mechanical inspection, but on their advice I decided to postpone replacing the water pump impeller and spark plugs on Tender Behind’s outboard until I can have her hauled out of the water as I didn’t relish losing parts overboard or delaying my departure. Tomorrow I would pilot Phat Bottom Girl for the first time with the help of her prior owner, Jai Brookes, to the Nanaimo Boat Basin before taking the ferry back to the mainland to fetch my crew. Our journey home was finally about to commence.

SO I BOUGHT A BOAT — Three and a half weeks I ago I set out on a 20-day journey to buy a 37-year-old powerboat in Nanaimo, BC, Canada, and repatriate her to the U.S.at Blaine Harbor in Washington State. A 1988 Bayliner 3450 Avanti Sunbridge, the 34-foot vessel has a length overall (LOA includes the bowsprit, swim grid, davits, and dinghy) of 40 feet, was built in Bayliner’s Arlington, WA, plant, and has spent the rest of her life until now in Nanaimo. Aptly named for her wide beam of 12 feet 10 inches, Phat Bottom Girl has had three prior owners, with the most recent, a big Queen fan, owning her since 2001.

She sports twin Crusader 454’s that deliver 330 hp each, BorgWarner transmissions, and Velvet v-drives, all renowned for their reliability and longevity in marine environments. The engines and transmissions were rebuilt in 2017 and there are only 310 hours on them, so they’re almost like new. PBG will get up on plane at 16 mph and has a max hull speed of 28 mph but we’ll likely cruise at around 10-12 mph for better fuel economy.

The boat has a Westerbeke generator, which will come in handy when anchoring out or lacking shore power. The dinghy, which the prior owner dubbed Tender Behind, is a 1975 Zodiac with a 1996 9.9 hp Evinrude 2-stroke outboard.

As the marine survey we commissioned (an ultra-important pre-purchase due-diligence task) highlighted, Phat Bottom Girl is in exceptional condition for a boat of her age.
