My daughter was the best companion, too. She has the biggest heart and loves learning about her Grandpa Doug, which makes my job teaching her about him so much easier.

This month marks 8 years in Edmonds, and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be. I know he led me here, but a proper tour was overdue.

What can a confrontation between two male giant Pacific octopuses (GPO) teach us about competition, communication, and survival?

In this footage I filmed two male GPOs engage in male guarding and fighting behaviors. These encounters offer a rare opportunity to observe how animals that typically lead solitary lives interact when reproduction is at stake.

The GPO (Enteroctopus dofleini) is an extraordinary example of how evolution has shaped intelligence. With a central brain and extensive neural networks distributed throughout eight arms, octopuses sense, explore, respond, and make decisions in ways dramatically different from our own. Their behavior raises fascinating questions about communication, competition, adaptability, and how intelligence works.

Today is International Octopus Day, and tonight I'm hosting University of Washington neuroscientist Dr. David Gire at the Edmonds Waterfront Center Environmental Speaker Series. We'll explore his research into the Giant Pacific Octopus and what these remarkable animals are teaching us about the mind.

Inspired by the beloved novel Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, and the film starring Sally Field, I created a multimedia presentation exploring the real-life intelligence, mystery, and beauty of cephalopods—including the Giant Pacific Octopus of the Pacific Northwest. Remarkably REAL Creatures shares stunning photography, film clips, and firsthand stories into the hidden world of cephalopods from Puget Sound to our world ocean. Discover how these remarkable animals solve problems, change color, escape impossible situations, and interact with humans in ways that challenge what we think we know about animal intelligence. This presentation reveals why octopuses have captivated scientists, storytellers, and readers alike—and why protecting their ocean home matters more than ever.

When Marcellus, the giant Pacific octopus, reaches out to Tova, it is one of the moments that connects these two characters. While building the presentation, I came across this sequence. We had been diving this site again and again as there were males guarding a female on eggs when this one approached me. Cam was acting as my lighting assistant and second camera when this fella reached out and literally hugged me.
