gabi dao’s solo exhibition ‘The horrors persist but so do I’ remains on view until 12 July at Z33. dao’s exhibition includes a new series of sculptural works and a collaborative film made with Lou Lou Sanisbury. Hope you can see it in the flesh before it closes!

“Within the exhibition of gabi dao we see souls in a process of transition: moving between
realms and states of being. The works interrogate this poignant interstitial space. For those
restlessly searching for a new form, hope lies in transformation. dao constructs a system of
belief where demonised creatures such as bats or vampires become figures of resilience for
racialised, queer and trans communities.

In the first gallery of dao’s exhibition, three small house-like structures made from hand-made
ceramic tiles and wood draw on the spiritual architecture of outdoor shrines commonly found
in Vietnam, East and Southeast Asia. Traditionally holding offerings such as food, drink, and
incense, these structures are sites of veneration, care and transmission. They also provide
comfort to ‘hungry ghosts’: restless souls that have died unjustly.

gabi dao’s shrines are not dedicated to specific individuals, but to a broader practice of
devotion. These shrines are adorned with imagery of bats, which are often seen positioned in
thresholds like windows, roofs or doorways. In dao’s work, they evoke guardians that move
between realms, echoing spiritual intermediaries such as angels in Christianity.

In the following room, dao presents the collaborative film Resurrect Me as a Parasite made
with artist Lou Lou Sainsbury. Filmed in part at a grotto in southern France dedicated to
Mary Magdalene, the work combines ritualistic imagery of ‘parasitic’ figures such as vampires
and mosquitoes: beings which are dependent on others to survive. Reclaiming these vilified
creatures, dao and Sainsbury ask us to rethink concepts of disgust, divinity, and desire.”

The exhibition is in collaboration with Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht.

𝘓𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘸𝘯
2023, gabi dao
video installation

currently on view as part of 𝘖𝘯 𝘳𝘦-𝘦𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦
an exhibition in collaboration with Text my Sister, curated by Julia Fidder & Xenia Tsompanidou

The film explores the bat through the lens of ecology, culture, and belonging. Its research began during COVID-19, responding to the viral video of influencer Wang Mengyun, which sparked racism and xenophobia in far-right media. The film reflects on Western cultural associations of bats with evil, disease, and darkness. It follows a bat marionette named Lucifer who falls from the sky, landing at the foot of a broken limestone mountain. From there, Lucifer begins a journey to find and reunite with their fellow bats.
The work questions how fear and misinformation shape our relationship with nature. It sits at the crossroads of ecology and economy, sight and sound, alienation and belonging.

National Competition 1
I CONTAIN MULTITUDES

Saturday, 30 May / 12:15 / Kijkhuis 2
Sunday, 31 May / 16:00 / Kijkhuis 1

118 min.

The bodies in which we move through the world carry not just the weight of flesh and bone, but also that of the meanings ascribed to them. Whether projected onto them from the outside, or imagined from within, they emerge as sites of discourse, resistance, transformation, desire, play, and testimony. The works in this programme traverse these multitudes with acts of introspection, fabulation, and expression full of imagination and honesty.

‘How to Catch a Butterfly’, the filmmaker sets out on a very personal investigation into racial fetishisation and its entanglement with desire and self-perception. In ‘How to Dance’, physicality expresses a resistance that words are sometimes not able to convey. ‘Resurrect Me as a Parasite’ throws the supposed bodily binaries of life/death, self/other, and gender into disarray. ‘Call it Fate’ shows us the magic of longing by literalising the lovestruck metaphor, and ‘Last night i stayed within myself and this morning I decided to live here’ pays a visit to an inner world brimming with nostalgia and escapism. Finally, ‘Kontrewers’ poses an encounter between the local folktale of a mysterious stone with the filmmaker’s centennial grandmother.

Films in this programme:
→ How to Catch a Butterfly / Kiriko Mechanicus / 26’ / The Netherlands / 2026
→ How To Dance / Aileen Ye / 10’ / The Netherlands, United Kingdom / 2026
→ Resurrect Me as a Parasite / Lou Lou Sainsbury, gabi dao / 10’ / The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Canada / 2025
