Huge congrats to LOCO John Van Hamersveld @johnvanhamersveld.art for his well-deserved induction into the Hermosa Beach Surfing Walk of Fame yesterday. It was a great event with 5 incredible inductees. John grew up in nearby Palos Verdes, surfing with the absolute legends of the era, names like Phil Becker, Rick Griffin, Miki Dora and many others. His contributions to Surf Culture are massive, beginning with early surf film posters, logos like Clark Foam, then the iconic Endless Summer image which took the energy and feeling of surfing world wide in the early ‘60s and which still stands as THE timeless image encapsulating the feeling and meaning of Surf. Also great to bump into so many friends and legends like @therealjeffho @tmpgaryleonard @joshuapaskowitz and LOCO @nowisdom Thank you @postfutureart Alida Post for everything you do…it’s priceless! Honoring a true original.

John Van Hamersveld will be inducted into the 2026 Surfers Walk of Fame—recognizing a career that helped define the visual identity of surf culture and beyond.

The celebration takes place in Hermosa Beach with a full weekend of events, including a kick-off on Friday, April 24 at the Community Theatre (710 Pier Avenue), followed by the induction ceremony at Pier Plaza on Saturday, April 25th at 11AM.

The kickoff event will include a screening of John Van Hamersveld: Crazy World Ain’t It, produced and directed by LOCO Dave Tourjé.

From The Endless Summer to decades of groundbreaking work, JVH’s impact continues to ripple through art, design, and surf culture. Here’s to honoring a lifetime of contribution in Surf!!

7 years ago I produced and directed the film John Van Hamersveld CRAZY WORLD AIN’T IT with Chris Sibley and Drew Van Wyk. We debuted at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and won runner up in the Short Doc category. Ghost Dance Series by John Van Hamersveld

The hippie movement embraced many aspects of Indigenous culture, which helped raise public awareness about the treatment of Native peoples. Van
Hamersveld turned his attention to the Ghost Dance, an incredible, frenzied dance meant to bring back the buffalo and the old ways. The U.S. government, however, feared it was a war dance.

In his work, Van Hamersveld captured the dance’s intensity and motion. Though the figures are blurred, the energy and beauty shine through. What was meant to be a joyful expression was ultimately banned by the government.

Experience this powerful series in person and explore the movement, history, and emotion behind Van Hamersveld’s work.

From 1965 to 1968, Van Hamersveld served as head of design at Capitol Records. During this period, he worked closely with some of the most influential artists of the time, including the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Jefferson Airplane. Over his career, he has designed more than 300 album covers, including iconic works such as the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour, Jefferson Airplane’s Crown of Creation, the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street, and Kiss’ Hotter Than Hell. Each design demonstrates his ability to fuse psychedelic aesthetics with striking visual clarity, giving bands an unmistakable visual identity that complements their sound.
