For International Women’s Day, I’m sharing a conversation with designer @kirstybarros , founder of @posthunk , on her recent collaboration with @thesocialoutfit ~ a Sydney social enterprise creating employment and training pathways for refugee and migrant women in fashion.

Kirsty and I first met over 25 years ago while studying fashion together at RMIT University. Our paths have continued to intersect through textiles, material histories and a shared belief in clothing as a living cultural practice.

Years later, she travelled to Ghana at my invitation to teach patternmaking and sewing ~ another moment where fashion became a space for knowledge-sharing and connection.

Her latest project, TESSELLATE, brings together donated fabric remnants from Australian brands like @alemais.official and the skilled hands of the women working in The Social Outfit’s Marrickville studio to create one-of-a-kind garments.

In our conversation for Mother Tongue Journal, Kirsty reflects on collaboration, circular design, working with limitation and the quiet power of making clothes collectively.

Long time friend of WAH-WAH, @zeppelinhamilton captured on film wearing @billy_bain. Zeppelin first modelled for WAH-WAH 5 years ago, so it was such a treat to have him back in the studio. 🥰

And a moment for the shorts - custom made from vintage tablecloths by creative director @kirstybarros (aka @posthunk ) for our beloved videographer @jason_de_cox who kindly leant them for the shoot. It really is a creative family affair. 🥹

A recent crossover from my @posthunk world 🤍 Tessellate began with an invitation to reimagine donated remnants with the beautiful team at @thesocialoutfit . A remarkable Sydney social enterprise creating paid work, training and industry pathways for refugee and migrant women.
Each piece carries careful pattern-puzzling, shared skills and a lot of laughter. Proof that sustainability can be colourful, collaborative and deeply human.

I misbehaved in Yves’ garden because those naughty little cactus got me Ina playful shmooooddd!

Slipped past the electric blue walls
and into a montage of spines and secrets
Pierre Bergé watching calmly from somewhere between
memory and myth.

The Berber spirits were giggling. I swear it.

A dangerous encounter running my fingers along the HAUTE fire-engine red cactus,
slowly…
carefully…
like touching the wrist of someone forbidden or plucking the wild pear before it was ripe.

Everything here feels slightly illegal.
Like colour is doing something it shouldn’t.
Like the plants know more about pleasure than we do. They bounce off each other, screaming for our attention !

Under the Marrakech shadows that dance with sun and natural form
the cactus became an undersea landscape
tentacles reaching,
acid-trip coral dreaming of rain
that hasn’t existed for centuries.

I think YVES understood this place was not a garden.
It was a body.

And in these moments,
I was more than a visitor.

I was a small, feral thing,
frolicking between its ribs
trying not to fall in love
with every sharp, impossible curve.

Meet Tessellate: A Patchwork Collection

Tessellate is a story of community, creativity and reinvention. Designed in collaboration with @posthunk , this collection explores bold design and considered craftsmanship, through repurposing donated fabrics from industry partners including Alémais. From bold botanicals to graphic prints, every panel carries its own identity.

Each garment is one-of-a-kind. Each piece is wearable art - a statement of individuality, sustainability and conscious design.

Met our kindred spirits in Marrakech.

We spent the afternoon with designers Randall and Nicholas of @marrakshi.life , two artists quietly devoted to the slow rhythm of hand-loomed cloth. New York roots, Marrakech hearts. Working side by side with local artisans, letting time, hands and process lead.

We couldn’t resist bringing some pieces I have coveted back home, a check fluro and black coat, a gorgeous maxi dress, and Daniel of course in a matchy-matchy shirt.

But what stayed with me most was the feeling.

Being inside a living trade. Witnessing the patience. The pride. The play.

As directors of @thenestcreativespace, this place and people felt like meeting distant relatives. Same language. Different land.

A gorgeous beginning to Marrakech. Thank you for your hospitality sweeties !!! And of course adorned in @posthunk who generously shared the details of the factory and store here x wee!
