Hello everyone and welcome to Hidden Gems #43. Today instead of one song, I am doing a review of a whole album and an interview. However, this being Instagram I had to do an abridged version. So I urge you to check out the full one on my Substack https://obsessivethinker.substack.com/. Now back to the music at hand.

This delightful duo composed of Melanie and Jeremy hail from Washington D.C. Together they have carved a nice little spot in the musicverse for their own style of dissonant dreamy soundscapes. Backed with unique and haunting vocals, the visions created weave and twist in your mind with a delicious fuzz. The album: Evernear by Shades of Violette.

This album boasts a new direction for the band...fuzz. And lead vocalist Melanie confirmed it, “Jeremy said he particularly wanted to experiment with odd sounds and creative guitar glitches, inspired in part by our shared love of Just Mustard. Using those different fuzz sounds naturally pulled some of the songs toward a punchier, heavier sound.” One thing I noticed is that this album invites you in and holds you there as you get entranced with its melancholy bliss. With a heavier sound the songs flow like the weather, some songs carry a gentle breeze while some seem like there is thunder in its veins. When I asked Melanie about the inspirations she stated that “...nature and spirituality inspire me and that shows up in a lot of our songs”.

I hope you all enjoy the album as much as myself. My personal favorites are “The Hunter” and “Moonflower”. I just the dream vibe and vocal flow. If you are interested in their other creations Melanie performed backing vocals on tracks 1, 3, & 7on the album What It Is by JC & the Buddagong (formal Vigil singer Jo Connor’s side project) and Jeremy has another project called Postlooperish. Together they also created the intro track for the Blackmarket playlist on Spotify. And again I urge you to please go check out the full interview at https://obsessivethinker.substack.com/

Happy Listening!

MUSIC SHOULD BE DANGEROUS - 43 songs. A retrospective of the last 5+ years of my life. Includes collaborations with brilliant artists including Jeremy (@postlooperish), Nadine (@dinterphotography, @d1ntr_official), Scott (@scottbakergraham_music ), Wilda (@wilda.bien , @kvltovstatic ), @ruinthemind, Cliff (@cliffdean.deancliff), Jory (@blinds_music_official ), Mitch (@mitchinpolaroids ) and more. I also include some cover songs: Christan Death, new Order, Siouxsie, and Depeche mode (Dangerous, just for you Alex @aroma_margot ).

"Music should be dangerous" has been my philosophy for a long time. Music should have an intesnsity and an edge. I will not waste time on on making or listening to music that doesn't have some sense or urgency... If I make a song, I want it to channel some intense emotion.

Some of these songs have been remixed and remastered. This is just a look back at the crazy circus of my life for the last five+ years, and an expression of my philosophy. My music covers reimagined 80s goth rock, death ambient, synth pop, industrial, and whatever else I'm feeling. Anyone who has come near me and accepted me for who I am... thanks. I'm not here to do anything except express what is inside myself.

This collection is on my bandcamp.

Looking back on releases from late summer/early autumn last year…

VHT13: The Occasion (S/T) - The first full-length album from Vanessa Funke, a beautiful blend of new wave, post-punk, and gothy synth came out on September 24th, 2024. I’m happy to report that the followup album will be announced soon… 🥀

VHT14: Earth of Misery - In My Dreams - Our second collaborative release with @fiadhproductions, a beautiful and ethereal dungeon synth album, came out on August 13th, 2024. 🌙

VHT15: HF x PL - a collaborative split album from hex formes and Postlooperish, each of whom interpret 80s post-punk and synth in their own unique ways. This collection of dreamlike and haunting tracks is something like industrial-tinged electronic dreamwave. It released on August 20th, 2024. 🍬
