We spoke to Louise Cattrell at her current exhibition @postroomgallery LAST CHANCE TO SEE TODAY ⬅️

Louise is a Scottish painter whose dramatic, sweeping landscapes explore the boundary where recollection meets reality. Her practice is rooted in direct, solitary experience, traveling to profound terrains in Scotland, Switzerland, and the Australian outback that are “free of any human intervention.”

A distinguished alumna of Duncan of Jordanstone (Dundee) and the Royal College of Art as well as being a recipient of the John Minton Award, her canvases exist in a potent dual language of abstraction and landscape, shrouding the expanse in mystery.
Cattrell’s work powerfully channels the emotional spirit of Romanticism, yet remains deeply contemporary. The viewer’s experience is one of beautiful visual ambiguity: they may surrender to the atmosphere, seeing the texture of Scottish mists and rolling hills, or step back and encounter the work as a pure abstract form. It is through this profound duality, simultaneously open and closed to interpretation,that Cattrell achieves a compelling emotional depth and proves an assured understanding of painting’s evolving visual lexicon.

Lovely stopover at Sandie and Steve’s @postroomgallery to man the bar at the Harriet Meena Hill ‘Curtains’ PV. Exquisite miniatures of curtains painted onto pieces of the rubble of the partly-demolished Aylesbury Estate in SE London. Her pencil drawings are also very fine indeed👍😎

Since 2018, Hill has worked extensively with residents on the Aylesbury Estate in south east London, researching the connection of memory and place in light of the pending demolition of the entire estate. The Aylesbury research has produced two distinct bodies of work - Soft Concrete and The Aylesbury Fragments.

IGW EVENT: The gallery director will be present to discuss the works on Saturday 12 July and Sunday 13 July.
