or Beatrice Xuan Mak, peonies are more than a floral motif — they are a connection to family, memory, and Peranakan heritage in Malaysia. Created as a BFA thesis collection at the Fashion Institute of Technology, these fully-fashioned knitwear garments transform personal history into tactile design, blending feminine symbolism with intricate craftsmanship. Produced on Brother flatbed and Stoll industrial knitting machines, the collection is elevated through hand-crafted details including beading, carved brooches, and knitted heel covers. Rooted in nostalgia yet shaped through contemporary knitwear techniques, the work reflects how fashion can carry pieces of home across borders.

words can’t explain how crazy this semester has been. it’s been a whirlwind of new experiences, scary, difficult, happy, confusing, but overwhelmingly fulfilling. and for the first time in my academic career i am completely and totally satisfied with everything i did and i wouldn’t change anything about it. i love what i did. i do. and i don’t feel that way often so it means a lot when i can say that.

i have so many people to thank for all of this. first thank you to my knitwear family, peers, technicians, professors. i went into this so blindly and the support I have received in my time in this specialization is unmatched. thank you to all my fashion design friends and family. thank you to my roomies, Naïma, Aparna, Daniel, Sebastian, and Guppy. thank you to everyone who reached out to tell me my work was gorgeous. thank you to my family who supported me from thousands of miles away.

and a very special thank you to my dear Daniel, who continues to inspire me everyday and keep me going.

i love everyone who has been a part of this journey with me….i cannot express my gratitude enough but i hope this could give you a semblance of my feelings. that being said….thesis shoot pics coming soon! mwah!
