The Simpson STD14 26-1/8” tie down straps work wonders for shear. They are also only needed in certain places. This is one of those simple conundrums that is fun to watch the young crew members stare at and try to understand prior to them asking. The other thing not mentioned in this video is the first time we installed these straps in this manner and our framers showed up wanting to understand how they were supposed to install these straps that normally nail to the sheathing when they were on the interior side of the plate. Well, guess what, according to engineering they only need to fasten to the framing members which means the interior side does the same thing as the exterior side. Moving them to the interior gets them away from the edge of the concrete a little and make them easier to hide behind drywall and not have to worry about taping over all of those penetrations in my WRB.

Another builder asked: Who’s responsible for protecting the work on site the contractor or the installer?

At Aarow Building, our answer is simple: we are.

Our clients hired us to be the responsible party—the adult supervision—on every project. That means we check protection on every site, no matter who installed it. If it’s missing, weak, or could be better, we fix it.
Because at the end of the day, if there’s a problem, it’s our problem. So we’d rather make sure there isn’t one.

Who is responsible for protecting work on your project, general contractor or the installers?

Do you recirculate for your clients? If there is one demand that I have had come up that we never planned for it was how quickly hot water would reach the point of use. As we build for more educated, more demanding (in a good way), and higher-end clientele, we have to plan for any scenario that might cause discomfort no matter how small. I know for me, I don’t want to see that cold water be wasted while we wait for the hot water to arrive, but I haven’t had a client complain about that, they have just brought up how long it takes for the hot to arrive. These Grundfos pumps seem to work great. There are others, I have a Taco at my personal home with a smart plug that does the same thing. How do you solve for this?

One of our main window partners is @europeanarchitecturalsupply in Littleton, MA. Recently on the coast for @jlclive I took the opportunity to visit their showroom and check out some new products. These multi-slide doors from Cortizo were very interesting. This unit is about 10’ and 18’ wide with ¾” site lines on the panel edge. It doesn’t get much smaller than that. In fact, I would assume it doesn’t get smaller than that. Aarow Building is currently exploring these for a project, I will let you know if we end up getting to bring them in for our clients. In the meantime, give our friends a shout over at EAS.

I'll make this a dual discussion.......

1. I call it a slider because that's what my first encounter with a truss manufacturer called it. In this case it is a 2x4 slide in between the 2x6 top chord and the 2x4 bottom chord....this elevates the heel height at the exterior wall plane to allow for more insulation. Do you call it a slider? Another name?

2. Typically the top chord of the truss is a 2x4, in this c case it is a 2x6.......any thoughts? I'll toss the reason why in a story.....a little later

Lots of folks are starting to show up in a similar market here. Precut material might make things easier for some jobsite. Pre-labeled would probably help most jobsites. But almost all jobsites could benefit from structural connections being laid out beforehand. Of course more pre-planning needs to go into the project in lots of instances, but what project couldn’t benefit from more pre-planning?
