🎣 Throwback to This Beast! 🐟

Before Decker Lake closed, I had the chance to land this BASSQUATCH! I don't remember a dang thing about this fish though. 😆 What do you think it weighed? What an awesome fish from an incredible fishing spot. When a lake kicks out so many big fish that you can't remember a catch like this, it's a good problem to have! 🌊

Here it is. The "Best Five" caught by clients in 2024... but only kinda. 😂 Just like with mine a couple of days ago, I couldn't tell you the weights on any of these fish. We simply get too many of them for me to keep track, and it was really tough to judge between photos. I just had to go by which ones look the biggest in the photos. I will admit though, that last photo with both me and my client, there were other photos that possibly looked bigger... I am just partial to that pic. Ha! I am sure there were others that should ACTUALLY be in the best 5 here, but 🤷. Also, I ALWAYS get consent from clients before posting their photos, and there are at least a couple of fish that I know would've been contenders for the best 5... but those clients did not give consent to post their photos. It happens sometimes. Whatever the case, still some pretty stout ones here! Like I mentioned a couple of days ago, perhaps not as impressive as the stuff we see coming from J.B. Thomas and O.H. Ivie Lakes lately, but for our lakes here in Central Texas, it's impressive to me anyway! Also, not a single one of these fish was caught by sight-fishing for one on a bed (platform or no platform!). Lastly, not a single one of these fish was caught by us looking at that fish on livescope and casting at it. I will often see juicy cover/structure on the screen with some fish around it and tell clients to cast "40 ft that way" or "watch where I cast and throw right on top of me," but that's the extent of most of my livescoping with clients. That's not to necessarily knock the other guides that do that stuff, I'm just sayin'. 😎 #bassquatchfishing #bassfishing #bigbass #texasfishing #lunkerchasers

How long have you been rigging your plastics WRONG?! There's about a 50% chance that you've been rigging your plastics wrong for YEARS and have missed/lost a ton of bass (maybe a PB! 😫) as a result! It's important to understand the three main hook styles used for rigging plastics weedless in bass fishing and the differences in how to rig a plastic bait on each of them. From top to bottom we have here a straight shank worm hook (or flipping style hook), an offset round bend hook, and an offset wide gap hook. Let's start with the wide gap hook in image 1 (swipe left to see additional images). This is the hook most commonly rigged incorrectly. This is how the bait should look when rigged correctly. You'll notice in all of the correct photos that the lures are STRAIGHT with no bends, kinks, curls, etc. Your bait should be dead straight when rigged correctly. Image 2 shows how the bait should look from the top when rigged correctly. You will see the flat point section of the hook lying flat on top of the bait with the point "skin-hooked" and tucked just slightly back into the plastic. This will keep the bait very weedless. The INCORRECT rigging for this hook style is when you completely leave that whole flat side of the hook point INSIDE of the bait where you can't see your hook at all from the top. The problem with rigging this way is that the hookpoint is in line with the eye of the hook, so if your hookpoint is in the middle of the plastic, when you set the hook, you just push more plastic onto the hookpoint. IMAGE 3: Straight shank hook. Again the bait is perfectly straight. It is hard to see in image 4, but the small "bait-keeper" or barb-like thing near the eye of the hook should come out of the bottom of the bait and then push up flush to the bottom of the bait. This will prevent the bait from sliding down on the hook. You will see in image 5 that from the top side of the bait you CANNOT see the hook! Now is when you want to leave the hookpoint inside of the bait as opposed to the wide gap. Because the hookpoint is angled outward with this style and not in line with the eye of the hook, when you set the hook, your hookpoint will push out of the bait...

Do big beards = big bass? I think there may be a correlation. 🤔 Client with a girthy one here! It's Thanksgiving Break for a lot of folks. If you're sitting around looking for something to do, you need to consider booking a guided trip! Historically, we always have pretty stellar trips the week of Thanksgiving. It's a good week to go!! Plenty of open spots right now, but they usually fill up fast this week. #bassquatchfishing
