POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Full size zines really got all of the glory in the 90’s zine craze, but it was the ½ zine that was the glue that really held zine culture together.

Hear me out…

1. THEY WERE CHEAP AS HELL TO MAKE.
One sheet of paper became four pages. A few $$$, access to a copier, a stapler, & suddenly you were a publisher. You didn’t need money. You barely needed a plan. What’s a plan?

2. THEY WERE MADE TO TRAVEL & BE SHARED.
½ zines fit in your pocket, backpack, jacket, or shoved between a bunch of records. You bought one at a show, read it on the ride home, & handed it to somebody else the next day. It’s like the text message of alt-reading materials.

3. THEY MADE EVERYBODY THINK THEY COULD MAKE ONE.
You’d pick up some crooked, photocopied, handwritten ½ zine made by one kid in their bedroom & think, Wait… I can fucking do this. & then you did. That’s literally how & why I started my first zine in 1991.

4. THEY CONNECTED SCENES BEFORE THE INTERNET DID.
Bands. Shows. Record reviews. Interviews. Mail order. Other zines. ½ zines were tiny analog hyperlinks connecting one weird kid to another. They were cheaper to mail. Often just a stamp or two. Full size? Yeah right. That shit cost. Better hope you have some of those soaped up stamps you could reuse (IYKYK).

5. THEY FELT PERSONAL.
A ½ zine didn’t feel like something you bought. It felt like something somebody gave you. Handmade. You were holding their handwriting, shitty drawings, opinions, inside jokes, rants, bad photocopies, & whatever else was rattling around in their head. Even if 200 copies existed, somehow yours still felt like it had been made specifically for you.

Full size zines may have looked more legitimate sitting on the rack at a record store, & many of the zines I grew up reading are precious, beyond measure, to zine culture… but the ½ zine?

½ zines were a step above… because they were a step below and those fuckers traveled. That’s how culture spreads.

.
Ressurection
Middlesex College/Pandemonium/Unisound
1991-1994

There once was a band called Ressurection. They were from New Jersey.

Their members have been in some other bands you may have heard of like Release, 108, Deadguy, Floorpunch, Lifetime, Shelter, Texas is the Reason, Another Wall, Absolution, The Judas Factor, Hands Tied and Jets To Brazil.

They put out records on labels like New Age Records and Redemption Records. Deathwish put out their discography called “I Am Not” that also includes an amazing live set from KXLU

#Ressurection #meltingaway #Iamnotyouthculture #deathwishinc #newagerecords

Up Front
CT Posi Fall Fest
Knights of Columbus
Cromwell, CT
October 1, 2005

The guys in Up Front are some of my oldest and truest friends in the hardcore scene.

I can’t place where or when we actually met but I have to assume it was at some show at the Anthrax back in the late 80’s.

Most of the members of the band have done numerous other bands or record labels and been involved in hardcore in various ways.

These shots are from the CT Posi Fall Fest back in 2005 that also featured Bold, Outspoken, Follow Through, The First Step, Fired Up and a VERY young Have Heart.
