Cypherpunk revisited with Paul S & Max  26—27th September | 14:00-18:00

In this 2-day (4h) workshop, we want to give a theoretical and practical introduction to cypherpunk. We'll do this by combining technical activities with critical reading and discussion of historical key texts (Tim May, Jude Milhon, Mondo 2000, etc.) as well as contemporary texts. On each day, we will hold a communal discussion of varios seminal texts, focusing on the historical moment in which it was written and what it was reacting to, in order to more deeply understand and place the text in a realistic context, as well as to discuss the political and social ramifications of how it engages with technology as a liberatory force. We will complement this with various hands-on sessions that we'll all take part in, though participants can choose where to focus. These include: self-hosting collective document infrastructure, calendars, email servers, VPNs and mixnets, alternative phone operating systems, zero-knowledge cryptographic systems, anonymous payment systems / on-ramps, how to "vibecode" with privacy. We also highly encourage people to bring their own old android device, which we can flash with privacy-preserving operating systems. email p@plsdlr.net for more information

On the occasion of NFC Lisbon, @arabbankch invited me to write a survey for the artists participating in an exhibition organized around the theme of “SYSTEMS,” curated by @ninaroehrs, querying the state of creative technology today. The idea of an artist survey immediately made me think about the architect and conceptual poet Madeline Gins, whose contribution to the 1969 “Street Works” series convened by Vito Acconci and Bernadette Mayer was a typed questionnaire, which she handed out to artists and hangers-on from across New York’s downtown avant-garde, to be filled out and returned to sender. Like any American of the Tiger Beat generation, I love a good personality quiz slash mad lib slash unscientific attempt at data-collection — so, inspired by Gins’ poetics, I wrote up a bunch of questions that probe at the systems underlying software art production. It was a pleasure to hear back from artists like @jonaslund, @kimasendorf, @pppppppppaul, @lindadouniar, studio.binschtok, and more about their processes and tools! This is just a taste… an amuse-bouche, really… you can read the full set of responses at https://www.are.na/arab-bank-switzerland/systems-artist-survey. Gins’ original survey, pictured in part on the last slide, I first encountered in “The Saddest Thing Is That I Have Had to Use Words,” a compilation of her writings edited by Lucy Ives — required reading for all ART + LANGUAGE lovers !!!

Solo Exhibition PAUL SEIDLER “Nightmarket” Exhibition: February 21 – April 18, 2026 Nagel Draxler Kabinett The art market, and more specifically the digital art market – as the various places where artists, gallery owners, and buyers come together – can be described as an “informal market” (Isabelle Graw, 2008. Der große Preis: Kunst zwischen Markt und Celebrity Culture, 66). Informal markets often exhibit characteristics that correspond to the precarious economic conditions of art production. However, with the emergence of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), it became apparent that the overriding logic of traditional art markets was not wholly compatible with digital works. As a result, the primary and secondary markets for contemporary digital art differ fundamentally in structure from established art markets. In its infancy, the price and volume of primary sales of NFTs were too low to be of interest to commercial enterprises. During this period, artists typically created their own bespoke interfaces, tooling and websites where buyers could purchase and mint their NFTs. These early forms established a small but significant alternative to the gallery system for digital works, forging parallel distribution mechanisms and channels while enabling new spaces for critical discourse.  Paul Seidler is an artist, researcher and programmer based in Berlin, whose work traverses networks. Since 2015, he has been working with blockchain-based technologies to investigate questions of value, ownership and encryption. Seidler is recognized as one of the founding members of terra0, a collective committed to developing hybrid ecosystems within the technosphere. His work has been featured in prominent exhibitions and discussions, including the 7th Athens Biennale, Schinkel Pavilion, Transmediale, the 58th Carnegie International, and KW Institute for Contemporary Art. Sarah will discuss recent shifts in her thinking about NFTs and how she ‘learned to stop worrying and love the market’. Paul will consider the technical affordances of smart contracts in relation to arts practice, examining the medium-specificity of forms of expression within and beyond contexts of artistic production. What if an augmented forest owns itself? What if you could put a forest on a blockchain - a decentralized database system - to hack the current economic system in an attempt to place nature and capitalism on equal terms, by giving ownership of the forest, to the forest itself. In the meanwhile I'm wispering to this plant 🌱🙃 @fiberfestival #fiberfestival #fiber17 #amsterdam #terra0 #exhibition #blockchain #forest #capitalism #nature #decentralize #database #digital #technology #art #festival #netherlands #me #wispering #plant #video #paulseidler #paulkolling #maxhampshire #r4r @kevinchristiaans @twanronnes

Dear profiles, avatars, and online flaneurs, #Aksioma & @distant.gallery are summoning you to the online exhibition focused on artworks that engage with crypto culture in a critically constructive way. 💥 The exhibition 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗦 𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗔𝗧 𝟭 𝗣𝗠 𝗖𝗘𝗧 👉 𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗞 𝗜𝗡 𝗕𝗜𝗢 💥 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 #DomenicoQuaranta 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 #AnnaRidler #BenGrosser #ConstantDullaart #DIS #FaceOrFactory #KyleMcDonald #LaTurboAvedon #MoxieMarlinspike #Nascent #RheaMyers #SarahFriend #SarahMeyohas #SimonDenny #GuileTwardowski #Cosmographia #SterlingCrispin #TheMihaArtnak The exhibition features works that are diverse and made by artists that occasionally may have conflicting positions on specific topics, but the fifteen presented projects have at least one thing in common: they reveal, to paraphrase and acknowledge a less successful yet fertile “fork” in the original definition that lead to Post Internet, a high degree of “blockchain awareness”. And awareness – which manifests as forensic research, criticism, ironic scepticism, blatant provocation or subversive affirmation – is all we need to navigate this slippery scenario without being tossed around back to back by the powerful waves of rhetoric of crypto-enthusiasts, and to contribute to its development.

In the upcoming online exhibition 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘆𝘇𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺, the curator #DomenicoQuaranta says he sought to gather artworks that are challenging or questioning some of the assumptions or promises that are presented as truth by the marketing of the crypto enthusiasts, often disguised as information: originality, uniqueness, ownership, permanence, innovation, and the aura that comes with all this. 👉 On 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟰 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝟭 𝗣𝗠 𝗖𝗘𝗧 👉 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝘁 @distant.gallery [follow the link in bio] Featuring works that engage with blockchains and crypto culture by: #AnnaRidler #BenGrosser #ConstantDullaart #DIS #FaceOrFactory #KyleMcDonald #LaTurboAvedon #MoxieMarlinspike #Nascent #RheaMyers #SarahFriend #SarahMeyohas #SimonDenny #GuileTwardowski #Cosmographia #SterlingCrispin #TheMihaArtnak

In order to avoid catastrophic failure, they must agree on a concerted strategy, but some of them are unreliable. Used to illustrate how consensus is reached within distributed systems, this allegory can be applied to blockchains and to societies as well. Yet, in a peer-to-peer debate with no central authority, consensus is hard to reach for a reason; and the disagreeing general, the unreliable actor, may be our best resource against the common sense of the crypto-yuppies. #aksioma #distantgallery
