Out today!

‘Held in the Dark’ has a dual meaning and reflects a period of time supporting a loved one through complicated health issues, learning the nuances of isolation, uncertainty and hope from both sides. During this time I was also listening to a lot of music from the worlds of Big Thief, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith etc, on the CD player in my 2009 Ford Fiesta and beginning to explore the guitar more, writing there alongside piano. The vision for this album stemmed a lot from that sound world and was brought to life last December over three memorable days in the studio with some of my friends. It’s probably my favourite album so far and I loved the whole process of making this one especially.

I met the vocal ensemble Shards in England in 2025, during a week-long residency at the wonderful Studio Richter Mahr.

Here are short excerpts from our day together — “kas lilled elavad õitsemise üle / will the flowers survive blossoming”, with text by Tõnis Vilu.

In a month, we’ll be performing “Combing Hair into Sand” — a song cycle for vocal ensemble, percussion, violin and live electronics — in Estonia with Shards and percussionist Nicolas Stocker, followed by London in November:

8 Oct — Vanemuine Concert Hall, Tartu
9 Oct — Pärnu Concert Hall
10 Oct — Kumu Auditorium, Tallinn
17 Nov — EFG London Jazz Festival / Barbican

Among the many surprises at @endoftheroad festival's 20th birthday edition earlier this month was the first of three incredible performances in the space of 12 hours from @madrasalach_ which sealed the Irish band's status as one of the best live acts around right now. Ahead of their main set on the Garden stage , the six-piece pitched up at the piano stage for the first of two secret shows, playing a handful of songs for Best Fit, which included a stunning cover of fellow Dublin band @alazarussoul's 2019 track "Long Balconies", which you can watch in full below.

The cover was part of a secret session for Best Fit at this year's End of the Road, which also saw pop-up sets from Prewn, Brother Wallace, Jasper Llewellyn, Will Doyle, Jeffrey Lewis, Jordan Patterson, Morgan Nagler, Rostom Batmanjaki, TTSSFU, Way Dynamic, Modern Woman, Cleo Reed, Hayden Thorpe and thredd.

Best Fit's secret sessions have become a key part of End of the Road each year, bringing together artists from across the line-up in a series of short sets, exclusive covers, collaborations, and live interviews and Q&As. Past guests have included Lucy Dacus, St Vincent, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Moses Sumney, Laura Marling, Patti Smith, and Frightened Rabbit - who played a now iconic version of "The Modern Leper".

Next year's End of the Road Festival runs from 2 - 5 September 2027 with tickets on sale this evening (Monday, 14 September) from 7pm - head to the festival's website at endoftheroadfestival.com for more info.
