The renowned author of Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was 44 when he died, the cause of which is still debated today. Some reports claim that Robert Louis Stevenson was opening a bottle of wine when he turned to his wife and exclaimed “what’s that?!” and “does my face look strange?!” before collapsing. Others claim it was a jar of mayonnaise he was straining, but sources are unsure whether it was apoplexy, a stroke or a brain hemorrhage that took his life. Stevenson is commemorated by a plaque at Abernathy House, Mount Vernon.
