Dish Pit is the 2nd of 3 short films that I’ve had the joy of shooting with @annabanana_hops and our first to land at both @tiff_net and @vimeostaffpicks

Working with Anna has been a dream for me as a cinematographer because she shows up with such strong ideas about how she wants her scripts to feel and then gives me space to pitch her on different ways we can achieve those feelings visually.

Dish Pit was technically fairly simple but we spent a lot of time during prep in the actual location (@dannyspizzatavern for all your dining needs) rehearsing, blocking and planning out the shoot. It paid off because watching @mattyg0uveia + @austin__hutchings perform felt like witnessing real life play out right in front of us.

Our small but very mighty crew spent three days overnight in August and we had some of the most fun I’ve ever had on set (and ate the best thanks to chef @jonathan_neville_pde

For more info on Dish Pit check out Annas interview with @directorsnotes / the full credits on Vimeo and for a sneak peek at our next project swipe all the way to the end!

CREW maketh the film. And we got very, very lucky with ours.

You can have a script. You can have a vision. But when you surround yourself with faces like these, the film becomes so much more than what happens in front of the camera.

These are some of the faces that made @lefty.film what it is besides the lovely ones on screen 😇 @seth_m0han @noorkdhanda

Thank your these stills @abhaylol & @diegoilgarcia

On June 11, we sat under a Victorian glass dome listening to Aikebom play music so ephemeral, it became the soundtrack of the summer sun touching the century old panes. Nobody was on their phone, which honestly might be the highest compliment you can pay a Thursday night in Toronto. Afterwards, the panel teased apart time, life, and death, and we wandered into the greenhouse where Jordan was spitting poetry in near-darkness, his silhouette pressed against tropical plants in a glass box. To everyone who made this night possible, a BIG thank you.

We called the show “Perennial.” Named for the plants that die completely and return from the same root system, looking nothing like what came before. It felt like the perfect metaphor for a beginning. Turns out it was also the right metaphor for an ending.

That was the last MOSAIC.

After 3 years, 17 sold out events, and 1,220 people who walked through our doors, the experiment has completed its arc. We say that with our whole chest. MOSAIC was always a living canvas, an honest and effervescent reflection of both its producers and its people. A psychedelic event series in Toronto with no website, no ads, and a business model that would make an accountant weep. We knew we could shit the bed at any given show and we’d have to be ok with it.

None of this couldve happened without the people who showed up to perform, speak, sponsor, and build something they couldn’t fully see yet, on the strength of a pitch that was essentially “come do this thing we can’t quite explain, it’ll be great, probably,” and @sanjaysinghalofficial, who opened his doors before there was any reason to.

The perennial knows when to go quiet. So should we, because what are we if not the same thing in the end, something that grew from the soil and must return to it. But the roots are still underground, and whatever grows next will look nothing like what came before.

It has been an immense pleasure to cry, dance, build, grow, and laugh with every single one of you. Take care of each other, that was always the point.
