One of the biggest challenges when shooting multiple scenes in the same location is finding ways to change the look without having to completely rebuild the lighting setup. For this scene we wanted to create both a daytime and nighttime look using as much of the same lighting equipment as possible.

Outside we have a 6x6 frame of Half Soft Frost and 6x6 HiLite stretching across the window to help break up and soften the light coming into the space. This gives us a large surface to work with while keeping the direction of the light consistent. It also helps hide the lighting equipment outside the window and gives the window a blooming appearance in frame.

Just above the window we have the @knowled_global PL600RF from @godox_global pushing light directly into the space. The idea is to use this fixture to provide the majority of the light coming through the window and then adjust its color and intensity depending on the levels the DP @jonathanxphelps.dp needs.

For the nighttime scene we used a cyan color. This creates a much cooler ambience in the room and allows the warmer practical lights inside the space to stand out against the blue. To help carry that color farther into the room we also have a 4 foot tube light that can be moved around as needed. This gives us a little more control over the level of ambience without having to rely entirely on the light coming through the window.

The advantage of lighting the scene this way is that we can make some pretty substantial changes to the overall look without having to move or rebuild all of the lighting. By changing the color and output of the fixtures we’re able to get two very different environments while maintaining the same basic lighting setup.

I’m always grateful for the opportunity to direct. Thanks once again to my friends at DeVito/Verdi for trusting me with such an important project. Posing with my LiveOnNY crew including my sons, Justin, who was our DP, and Nicholas, our vocal coach for the talent, (and cast member, Pam Wilterdink, soon to be seen in The Realistic Joneses at Center Players of Freehold). Also featuring Arthur Gregory Pugh, Jackie Kuczinski, Prat Pa, Lorraine Stone, Laura Gabriel Fischer, Darren Carfano.
