In plain English: why looking strong and being strong aren’t the same thing 👇

A simple way to see it is the divide between hardware and software. Your muscle mass and size are the hardware (the engine). Your nervous system’s ability to actually use that mass is the software (the driver).

You can build a large, high-capacity engine without ever learning how to fully redline it.
If your goal is purely aesthetic, that’s fine.
But in strength sports, having an engine you can’t fully access is like owning a Ferrari and never taking it out of second gear.

⸻

The trade-off I’m highlighting in this post can be best reconciled by speaking of:

bodybuilding vs. powerlifting: While neither is better they different specializations. Bodybuilders primarily develop capacity 👉 growing the engine and the frame. Powerlifters primarily develop expression 👉 training the system to handle extreme force.

You can overlap both, but optimizing both to their absolute limit at the same time is difficult. I personally live somewhere in the middle, because the truth is; every training emphasis carries a trade-off. This is simply the SAID principle in action: the body adapts specifically to the demands placed on it.

⸻

The nuance 🧠

You can recruit high-threshold muscle fibers with lighter loads taken to failure. But using them under fatigue isn’t the same as training them to fire early, efficiently, and in coordination.

Heavier loads are generally more effective at driving: Neural drive & rate coding, the speed and intensity of signals from the brain. Tendon stiffness & force transfer, the body only strengthens the “cables” when the stress demands it

If the brain doesn’t trust the structure, it will down-regulate force to protect you.

⸻

The bottom line 🏁

Muscle equals strength potential.
But potential alone doesn’t guarantee output.

If you still don’t have a solid base to progress from, sign up to 👉 Booty by Bret linked in my bio (7-day trial applies at checkout). It’s the only program I can wholeheartedly recommend and sleep at night.

And that’s coming from someone who almost never promotes anything on this app. If I can’t stand behind it fully, I won’t say it at all.
