When setting up a sizing die, what matters isn’t where the die sits.

What matters is what happens to the brass.

Without measuring shoulder bump, you have no way of knowing whether you’re sizing enough, sizing too much, or not enough at all.

Too little shoulder bump can lead to difficult chambering and reliability issues.

Too much shoulder bump can unnecessarily work the brass, reduce case life, and increase the risk of premature case head separation.

The solution is simple:

Measure the result, not the die position.

One important note:

If you’re using a headspace comparator system, don’t compare your measurements directly to someone else’s numbers. Different systems can produce different absolute values. What matters is the change relative to your fired case.

Also, don’t assume that once your die is set up, you’re done forever.

Different loads, brass lots, firing conditions, and even brass age can influence how much the shoulder moves during firing.

That’s why it’s good practice to periodically verify your shoulder bump and confirm that you’re still getting the result you intended.

Because when it comes to sizing brass, guessing is not a measurement.
