$Predrag Djakovic at the Serbia Pavilion, Venice Biennale @predragdjakovic1 #serbianartist #serbianart The installation by the artist Predrag Djakovic is conceived as a visual field of memory that refuses the linear logic of history, opening instead as a fragmentary, stratified repository of traces. This is not an archive in the traditional sense; rather, we find ourselves in a space akin to what Jacques Derrida described as mal d archive - a site where preservation and oblivion intertwine within an ambivalent structure of power. Djaković works with photographs from personal files, anonymous portraits, maps, administrative documents, and newspaper clippings from the twentieth century. Their rawness resists nostalgia. As Walter Benjamin observed, the technical trace of the past is never merely a document; it is also testimony to what has been lost without a name. The tragic horizon of the installation extends beyond Europe’s borders, unfolding as a global experience of the twentieth century - a period in which modern ideals, from rationality to humanism, repeatedly collapsed under the weight of violence, ideology, and mass manipulation Europe played a crucial role in this dynamic, but it was not the sole stage; its conflicts, breakdowns, and moral ruptures formed part of a wider global movement. The visual material layered by the artist resonates with a worldwide experience of broken promises and fractured worldviews that marked the entire century.$

$During the Preview Week of the 61st Venice Biennale of Art, @caseykelbaugh traveled to Italy to provide coverage for the @nytimes. Since its inception in 1895, @labiennale has become one of the world’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious contemporary visual art exhibitions. But it is much more than that - which we will try to convey with 3 photo galleries. This first one focuses on the national pavilions, where individual countries curate and manage their own exhibition spaces - housed in permanent buildings in a park known as the Giardini, the massive former shipyard spaces of the Arsenale as well as various locations across the city of Venice. Because its structure is built around national participation, the Biennale mirrors existing shifting alliances, conflicts, and power dynamics. The 2026 Biennale has been widely cited by cultural critics as one of the most politically tumultuous and fractured editions in decades. Slides: 1. Austria 2. Japan 3. Serbia 4.
