In 1936, Harlem postman Victor Hugo Green published The Green Book to help Black travelers find businesses that would welcome them during segregation. What began with New York City listings grew into a guide used across the country, including along Route 66.

Behind its pages were his wife, Alma, fellow mail carriers and a community sharing information that could make all the difference on the road. For roughly three decades, this small book helped travelers plan where to eat, sleep and fill up.

Route 66 Centennial Caravan - Day Ten, Part Two
6/15/2026
Glenrio, Texas to Amarillo

Part Two of The Route 66 Replay for Day TEN on The Route 66 Centennial Caravan. First off, a BIG thank you to Melissa Lea, President of the New Mexico Route 66 Association, for allowing me to use her photos of the First/Last Stop In Texas Cafe sign relighting, in Glenrio. And also our Centennial Caravan group photo at the Midpoint Line in Adrian. Sometimes I need to reach out to fill in the gaps, and it’s greatly appreciated when good people come through!

Our Day Ten journey continues with the trophy handoff from New Mexico to Texas. A very fun moment indeed. We reached our Route 66 halfway point (1,139 miles) at The Midpoint Cafe in Adrian. It was a very fun stop with homemade desserts, and a lot of good people. We received a great welcome in Vega. A lot of history here, with cool drinks and goodies at Mama Jo’s Pies & Sweets.

Our final stop was Amarillo, where we attended the 66th birthday for The Big Texan Steak Ranch. It was one for the books. Since this was my first time traveling Route 66 in Texas, I had to make a stop at The Cadillac Ranch, and visit Downtown Amarillo. Lots of historic sites and beautiful neon, which made for a very worthwhile stop.

🍿🎬 What a night in Tulsa! I was honored to attend the Oklahoma Premiere of Route 66: The Main Street of America with filmmaker John Paget, and the room was full of the people who keep the Mother Road’s story alive.

It was a treat to be there with Michael Wallis, Rhys Martin, and Ken Busby. Watch the video to hear what folks had to say about the film. The love for Route 66 was easy to see.

Congratulations to John Paget on a film that honors the road and the people along it. They’re headed all the way to LA on Route 66 so get a ticket and go see it!

Route 66 Centennial Caravan - Day Ten, Part One
6/15/2026
Santa Rosa to Glenrio, New Mexico

The Route 66 Replay for Day TEN on The Route 66 Centennial Caravan. Halfway through this amazing road trip, folks! Last night in Santa Rosa was our final evening in New Mexico, and today we would complete our 487 mile stretch of Route 66, through this amazing Land Of Enchantment, and cross into The Great State Of Texas. Destination Amarillo.

Part One features all the great moments of our last stretch of Route 66 through New Mexico, with stops at the ghost towns, or near ghost towns of Cuervo, Newkirk, and Montoya. And the “Cuervo Cutoff”, which is the original alignment of Route 66 after you leave Santa Rosa, was a really nice treat. Tucumcari speaks for itself, with all its amazing historic sites, beauty, and Tucumcari Mountain.

Route 66 Centennial Caravan - Day Nine
6/14/2026
Santa Fe to Santa Rosa

The Route 66 Replay for Day Nine on The Route 66 Centennial Caravan. After a quick breakfast bite to eat, we left Santa Fe and started our 120-mile southeast trip to our final destination: Santa Rosa. Not too many stops on this trip, but a lot of beautiful rolling hills and New Mexico countryside. And once again we stayed off the interstate as much as possible. This would also be our final full day, and last evening, in The Land Of Enchantment.

Our first stop was Pecos National Historic Park. At 6,671 acres, it’s a decent sized park, and well worth the visit. The next stop was Las Vegas for lunch and a walking tour, then on to our final stop in Santa Rosa. BIG highlights included the beautiful Route 66 Auto Museum, an amazing dinner at The Silver Moon Cafe, lots of old historic sites, and the Big Texan 72 Ounce Steak Challenge which was held at the historic Blue Hole.
