Gratitude and godspeed to VDL Director Noam Saragosti (@noamsaragosti) and Juhee Park (@juheeparkj; they of Aunt Studio / @aunt_studio) for their stewardship and fostering of the Neutra VDL House (@vdlhouse) over the past six years.

It was a great honor to show works at the house on behalf of the seminal Built In, organized with Noam and dear friend and co-curator Erik Benjamins (@erik.benjamins), who documented the house and its works in various lights and times-of-day over the show’s seven-week run (September 18 – November 07, 2021). Just some of those 1000+ photos are highlighted here.

A portrait of the four of us—Noam, Erik, Benjamin, Heidi—can be found on the last slide. We look so much younger.

Built In was about what ‘comes with’ any historical home, let alone one with such a dynamic set of authors and keepers. It was a joy to commune with the place day after day during Built In; to learn from it lessons both overt and subtle; to unpack, and then demystify, and then re-romanticize modernism and some of the architectural legacies of the city that frame L.A. just-so nearly a hundred years after the house’s initial construction.

Built In was foundational to Marta’s early years and marked a true bright spot in the middle of a global and local pandemic, with Heidi and Erik giving masked tours sometimes more than a dozen times per week over the course of the show’s run. Some of the gallery’s most formative and meaningful relationships stem from this mini-epoch in the autumn of 2021.

We sigh deeply with nostalgia and gratitude!

Thank you, dear Noam!

“It’s hard to find a good sconce.” We’re delighted to highlight and make available a selection of works from practices near and dear: introducing Preston Taylor Alba’s perfect Stone sconces, part of a series of glass forms rooted in the pure and age-old avocation of rock-collecting.

@prestontayloralba’s work has been in the gallery’s orbit for nearly a half-decade. In 2021, Alba was a part of Marta’s lauded offsite exhibition, Built In at the Neutra @vdlhouse; and since then, Preston has been in-house at some of Los Angeles’ very best interior design practices.

In the background and since 2020, Preston has collaborated with the Los Angeles-based Japanese glass artist Kazuki Takizawa (@ktglassworks) to realize a timeless series of lighting based on the collecting habits of some of the twentieth century’s most lauded Southwest US artists (Georgia O’Keefe, Donald Judd, et al.). Alba’s Stone sconces / flush-mounts are predicated in part on the irresistibility of [picking up] a handsome stone. And in that spirit, no two of the glass forms therein are quite alike, making a would-be pair of them alluringly same-same but different.

To paraphrase Judd, It’s hard to find a good sconce.

We’ve been admirers of Preston’s output for some time, and are pleased to make available the above-pictured Stone (Form 01) and the not-yet-shared Boulder (Form 02) flush-mount lights as part of the gallery’s ongoing and evergreen offerings.
