Balanites aegyptiaca When we had stomach aches in childhood, Mom used to crush the Ingoriya (Desert Date) seeds with a mortar and pestle and give us the remedy. Back then, we didn’t know its scientific name, which is Balanites aegyptiaca. It belongs to Zygophyllaceae family. The seeds were used to treat stomach aches, jaundice, hepatic diseases, yellow fever and other ailments, as mom was already aware. We have learned from the video of ‘Trees of India’ that it contains high amount of saponins, so its fruits were used as an alternative to soap and detergent in earlier times. People knew the uses of this plant, which is why they grew it. However, nowadays, we are forgetting Mom’s Remedies and Traditional Knowledge, leading to the rarity of this tree.
